Six minutes. No call. No email. Just four words under a job you were sure you fit.
Or it went the other way. "Application viewed" showed up on Tuesday, and you have opened the app every morning since, waiting for a message that never comes.
Same app. Two labels. Zero explanation. So who actually made the call, and is it final?
What "Not selected by employer" means on Indeed
Indeed defines it in five words: "The employer rejected your application."
Treat it as a rejection for that job unless the employer tells you otherwise.
- It is not Indeed choosing whom to hire. The employer controls the rejection criteria and hiring decisions.
- It is not a closed job. A posting the employer closed, or one that expired, shows as "Job closed."
- It is not silence. "Response seems unlikely" is Indeed's forecast that a reply is unlikely, rather than an employer-set rejection.
"Not selected by employer" on Indeed is a rejection of one application, set by the employer or by a screener rule the employer chose. It closes that application only; the company's other openings are separate applications.
The harder question is who, or what, pressed the button.
Did a person or an automatic rule reject you?
An application can reach the Rejected list before anyone reads the resume.
- Only pre-made questions can be required. Examples cover licenses, experience, location, work authorization and shift availability. Custom questions cannot be required.
- Required means moved. Missing that criterion sends the application to the Rejected list, where it remains available to the employer.
- Preferred means flagged. A miss on a preferred question keeps you in the applicant pool, with a note that you did not meet that preference.
- Work authorization: distinguish permission to work from a need for sponsorship
- Experience: count relevant work accurately, across the job titles where you performed it
- License or certification: check the exact credential and whether it is current
- Location and shifts: confirm what you can actually commit to
Does Indeed's AI reject applicants?
Smart Screening can automate messages and call invitations using an employer-selected score threshold. Its documentation does not describe a low score automatically rejecting an applicant. Required screener answers are the automatic rejection mechanism Indeed explicitly documents. Neither scoring nor placement in the Rejected tab deletes the application from the employer's reach.
| When the label appeared | Possible explanation | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Minutes after applying | A required screener answer missed the employer's criterion | Re-check your answers. Speed alone does not prove automatic rejection. |
| Days or weeks later | A manual decision, delayed update or review of several applicants together | The label gives no specific reason. Keep applying elsewhere. |
| After an interview | The employer decided not to advance the application | Ask for feedback once. If a future interview is still scheduled, confirm with the recruiter. |
Indeed's candidate-management guide says required-question rejections do not trigger a notice unless the employer sends a response. Its rejection automation, when enabled, schedules a no-reply email three days after the status changes to Rejected, for both manual and screener rejections. A label and an email need not arrive together.
A rejection within minutes is consistent with a required screener rule. That is an inference: Indeed does not identify the cause from the label, and timing cannot establish whether a person reviewed the application.
So the decision is made. Is it permanent?
Can "Not selected by employer" change?
Yes, but only from the employer's side.
Indeed's employer FAQ says applicants in the Rejected tab can be reviewed at any time and moved to Reviewed. Rejected applications remain visible to the employer; they are not thrown away.
Changing your own status in My jobs records your progress. It does not make the employer reconsider a rejection.
If the employer agrees to another review, ask what happens next. The cited help pages give no deadline for a changed employer status to appear in My jobs.
When asking for a second look is worth it:
- There is a concrete error to correct. A mistaken screener answer is a reason to request another look. Correct it truthfully and include evidence.
- A contact channel is available. Indeed messaging appears only when the employer enables it, with an alert after a delay of at least a few days. An existing recruiter conversation also gives you a way to clarify conflicting updates.
Without an error or conflicting information, one rejection does not give enough information to argue the decision. Move on to suitable openings.
Hi [Hiring team or recruiter name], I applied for the [Job title] role on [date]. In the screening questions, I answered [question] with [wrong answer] by mistake. The correct answer is [correct answer]: [one line of proof, for example "I hold an active RN license in Texas, number available on request"]. If the role is still open, I would appreciate a second look at my application. My resume shows [one specific match with the posting's top requirement]. Thank you for your time, [Your name] [Phone] | [LinkedIn URL]
Indeed's cited help pages do not promise that a rejected applicant can resubmit to the same posting. Request reconsideration for a concrete error instead of trying to bypass a required qualification. For a different opening or a reposted role, check the employer's reapplication instructions and apply if permitted. Withdrawing is not a reset: Indeed warns that you may not be able to apply again.
Only the employer can reverse "Not selected by employer," by moving you off its Rejected list. A short correction message can request reconsideration when there is a concrete error.
The other labels tell a different story.
Every Indeed application status, explained
Eleven labels. Three owners. Only one of them is a rejection.
As of October 2026, Indeed's Help Center lists eleven statuses for the Applied tab of My jobs: four you can update, three listed under employer updates and four set by Indeed. Employers can also set three of the four user-editable statuses. These groups are not eleven steps every application follows.
| Status | Set by | Indeed's definition | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Applied | Indeed (mobile app) | "You submitted an application." | Submission recorded. It does not confirm review. |
| Employer reviewing applications | Indeed (mobile app) | "The employer is reviewing applications, but has not reviewed yours yet." | Activity on the job, without a recorded review of your application. |
| Application viewed | Employer | "The employer reviewed your application." | A recorded review does not disclose the outcome. |
| Employer reached out | Employer | "The employer contacted you through Indeed." | Check Indeed Messages and your email today. |
| Interviewing | You or the employer | "If you get an interview, update your status to Interviewing." | Prepare for the interview and check the scheduling details. |
| Offer received | You or the employer | "The employer offered you the job." | Review and negotiate before you accept. |
| Hired | You or the employer | "You accepted the job offer." | Done. |
| Not selected by employer | Employer | "The employer rejected your application." | Closed for this job unless the employer moves you back. |
| Response seems unlikely | Indeed (mobile app) | "We don't expect the employer to reply." | Indeed's own forecast. Shift your energy to new applications. |
| Job closed | Indeed (mobile app) | "The employer closed the job, or the job expired." | The posting ended. This does not specify a decision on your application. |
| No longer interested | You | "You're no longer interested in this job." | Your own label for tracking. |
Three rules from Indeed's Help Center explain most "why don't I see that?" questions:
- Indeed-set statuses only appear in the mobile app. Indeed says the statuses it sets "are only available if you use the mobile app," so a laptop can show less than your phone.
- Employer and Indeed statuses are usually limited to jobs posted directly on Indeed. If you applied on another site, you may see no updates at all.
- Interviews scheduled on Indeed move to the Interviews tab. There, each one carries a live label such as "Interview starts in 4 hours," "Canceled by employer" or "Not selected by employer."
What "Employer reviewing applications" means on Indeed
The employer is reviewing candidates, but Indeed has not recorded a review of your application. Indeed sets this mobile-app label; it does not mean you were shortlisted.
Keep applying and watch for direct contact. The label gives no queue position, promise of review or response date. "Application viewed" concerns your individual application; "Employer reviewing applications" concerns activity on the job.
"Employer reviewing applications" indicates activity on the job, without a recorded review of your application. It does not predict whether you will get an interview.
What "Response seems unlikely" means on Indeed
It is Indeed's forecast, not the employer's decision. Indeed says "We don't expect the employer to reply," and shows the status in the mobile app when one of two things is true: the employer "has already hired enough candidates," or there has been "no activity on your application for at least two weeks."
Prioritize other applications, but leave the door open for a later reply. Two weeks without recorded activity does not prove that the application is closed. If a recruiter gave a later decision date, use that timeline.
Indeed says an application may not appear if you did not apply directly on Indeed, if it is linked to a different Indeed account or email address, or if you applied more than six months ago. My jobs lists six months at a time; older applications to jobs posted on Indeed can be requested through Indeed's Personal Data Request Form.
"Response seems unlikely" is Indeed's prediction, not an employer-set rejection. Move your search forward while checking any direct messages and the employer's stated timeline.
Most of those labels change without you. Four of them are yours to set.
How to update your status in My jobs
An application completed on a company website does not automatically save in My jobs. Save the listing and manually move it from Saved to Applied to keep a record.
Step 01: Open the Applied tab
Step 02: Open the menu next to the status
Step 03: Choose Update status
Step 04: Archive, view details or withdraw
The same menu offers Archive, Report Job, View and manage details, and Withdraw application. Viewing application details or withdrawing requires a job posted directly on Indeed.
- You may not be able to apply to that job again.
- The employer may still contact you.
- A withdrawal cannot be reopened. If you withdrew by mistake, Indeed says to message the employer.
- The optional withdrawal survey is confidential, and Indeed says it won't share your answer with the employer.
Updating a status helps organize your applications. Archiving removes a job from your active view; withdrawing ends your application and cannot be undone in My jobs.
Now the label everyone over-reads.
What "Application viewed" means on Indeed
"Application viewed" feels like progress. It leaves the hiring decision unanswered.
| Application viewed DOES mean | Application viewed does NOT mean |
|---|---|
| The employer opened or reviewed the application within Indeed | You were shortlisted or ranked above other applicants |
| A review event was recorded | An interview invitation is coming |
| The employer's workflow supports the view signal | Every later hiring action will appear in My jobs |
A missing view status does not prove nobody read the application. Indeed can deliver applications through its dashboard, an ATS or email. Check the employer's portal and messages when the hiring work happens elsewhere.
"Application viewed" on Indeed means someone opened your application. It is a signal of attention, not a shortlist, and the next real signal is a message, an interview request or a status change.
So how long after "viewed" should you wait before you stop waiting?
How long Indeed employers take to respond
Waiting on one application leaves your search dependent on a reply that may never arrive.
Use these checkpoints for an Indeed application:
| Time since applying | What can happen | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Minutes to hours | Required screener criteria can produce an automatic rejection, but the label does not reveal the cause | Re-read your answers without assuming timing proves what happened |
| A few days | If the employer enabled messaging, a Send a message option appears after "a short delay of at least a few days" | Wait until about day 7, then send one short message (template below) |
| At least two weeks without activity | Indeed may show Response seems unlikely | Prioritize other roles; a later reply remains possible |
| After an interview | Indeed's career guide gives one to two weeks as a typical window, with longer waits possible | Respect the promised date; if none was given, wait at least a week before following up |
Indeed's two-week inactivity rule is a reason to prioritize other applications, not proof that this one ended. Direct recruiter messages and stated deadlines should guide follow-up timing.
But Indeed is not always where the decision lives. For many large employers, the real status sits in a different system.
How Indeed statuses connect to Workday, iCIMS and other ATS
Your status in My jobs is only as good as the system feeding it. An Indeed application can travel three ways:
- The employer reviews through Indeed or email. Indeed's dashboard guide lists six employer-side statuses: New, Reviewing, Contacting, Interviewing, Hired and Rejected. These differ from the eleven labels job seekers can see.
- You used Indeed Apply, but the employer runs its own ATS. Your application lands in a system such as Workday, iCIMS, SAP or Oracle, and the recruiter works there. My jobs may show no update for the life of the application.
- You completed the application on the company site. It does not automatically save on Indeed; manually update the saved job to track it there.
Indeed describes using that data for hiring insights, matching and the Responsive Employer badge. These documents do not promise that every synced status appears in My jobs. For updates, check the employer's candidate portal and direct communications.
Indeed lists 24 standard disposition statuses, with NEW, NOT_SELECTED and HIRED marked required. These are API categories, not additional My jobs labels. The examples below show how an integration can group ATS wording; they do not guarantee that every vendor uses the same labels.
| Indeed standard status | Indeed's description | Example ATS labels Indeed lists |
|---|---|---|
| NEW | "ATS received a new job application." | New, Applied, Received, New candidate |
| REVIEW | "Recruiter is reviewing the application." | In review, Review, Reviewing |
| LIKED | "Recruiter liked, favorited, or shortlisted the application." | Liked, Shortlist, Highlight, Favorited |
| SCREEN | "Pre-hire screening." | Phone screen |
| INTERVIEW | "Candidate is interviewing." | Interview, First round interview, Interview phase |
| OFFER_MADE | "Employer made an offer to the candidate." | Offer, Offering, Offer initiated |
| HIRED | "Candidate accepted a job offer." | Hired, Placed |
| NOT_SELECTED | "Employer did not select the candidate." | Rejected, Release, Unsuitable, Do not pursue |
| JOB_CLOSED | "Employer closed the job." | Job close, Job closure, Job closed, Job cancelled |
My jobs may show incomplete information when the employer works in an ATS. Check its candidate portal and direct recruiter messages; even a portal can lag behind the hiring team's actions.
Different systems, different words. Underneath, there are only a few outcomes.
Not selected by employer vs. similar statuses
Every hiring system has its own way of saying no, and a few labels that only look like no. Here is how Indeed's rejection label compares with the ones you will meet elsewhere.
| Status | Where you see it | Is it a rejection? | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Not selected by employer | Indeed My jobs | Yes, for this one job | Diagnose the cause, then apply elsewhere |
| Response seems unlikely | Indeed mobile app | It does not confirm rejection; Indeed expects no reply | Prioritize other roles and keep an eye on messages |
| Job closed | Indeed mobile app | It describes a closed or expired posting, not your individual outcome | Check any ongoing interview process with the recruiter |
| No longer under consideration | Employer career portals | Yes | Same plan as Not selected |
| Not retained | Employer career portals | Yes | Same plan as Not selected |
| Requisition closed | Employer career portals | It concerns the opening; the reason depends on the employer's system | Check the employer's explanation and other openings |
| NOT_SELECTED | Sent by an employer's ATS to Indeed | Yes | Check the employer's portal; My jobs may not reflect it |
| Rejection message | LinkedIn (see what LinkedIn application statuses mean) | Yes, for this one job | Same plan as Not selected |
"Not selected by employer," "No longer under consideration" and "Not retained" describe the same outcome: a rejection for one job. "Response seems unlikely" and "Job closed" do not establish that same decision on your application.
Knowing where the decision lives is useful. Doing something with it is better.
What to do after "Not selected by employer"
A single rejection tells you very little. A pattern of them tells you a lot. Run this plan the day the label appears.
The label does not prove a resume problem. Check for errors and improve the next application where there is a real gap, then keep the search moving.
If an application is still open after a week with no response, a short follow-up through Indeed's messaging (when the employer enabled it) is fair:
Hi [Hiring team or recruiter name], I applied for the [Job title] role on [date] and wanted to confirm my interest. The posting asks for [top requirement]; in my current role I [one result that proves it, with a number]. If it helps, I am available for a short call [two specific time windows]. Thank you, [Your name] [Phone] | [LinkedIn URL]
After "Not selected by employer," correct any identifiable error and apply to suitable openings. A rejection label alone does not explain what went wrong.
- 01"Not selected by employer" means the employer rejected your application for that job, either by hand or through a required screener question it set.
- 02A rapid rejection is consistent with a required screener rule, but timing cannot prove the cause. Rejected applications remain available for employer review.
- 03Indeed lists eleven statuses in three groups: four you can update, three employer-updated labels and four Indeed-set mobile-app labels. Employers can also update Interviewing, Offer received and Hired.
- 04"Application viewed" records a review event, not shortlisting. "Employer reviewing applications" concerns the job's applicant pool rather than your application.
- 05Response seems unlikely is Indeed's forecast after enough candidates are hired or at least two weeks pass without activity. Job closed concerns the posting. Neither confirms your rejection.
- 06Keep applying, correct concrete errors and use the employer's portal and messages for next steps when it works in an ATS.
What does "Not selected by employer" mean on Indeed?
It means the employer rejected that specific application. A manual decision or an answer that misses an employer's required screener criterion can produce a rejection. The label does not disclose the reason.
Does "Not selected by employer" mean Indeed's AI rejected me?
The label does not identify AI as the cause. Indeed's Smart Fit Score helps employers evaluate applications; its documentation does not describe automatic rejection based on a low score. Required screener questions can automatically reject applicants under criteria the employer set.
Why did I get "Not selected by employer" right after applying?
An answer that misses a required screener criterion is one possible cause. Indeed documents that automatic mechanism, but it does not confirm the cause of your label. Re-check the answers; timing alone cannot prove a screener rule rejected you.
Can I get "Not selected by employer" after an interview?
Yes. Indeed's Interviews tab can show this label. It means your application was rejected, but does not establish that someone else was hired. If another interview is still scheduled or the recruiter gave conflicting information, confirm with the recruiter before cancelling.
Can the employer still see my rejected Indeed application?
Yes. Indeed says applications rejected by required screener questions remain in the employer's Rejected list. Employers can review them at any time and move them back to the active applicant pool. Automatic rejection does not delete the application.
Can an employer undo "Not selected by employer" on Indeed?
Yes. Indeed's employer FAQ says employers can review applicants in the Rejected tab at any time and move them to Reviewed. Job seekers cannot reverse the status themselves.
Will Indeed email me when I am not selected?
A rejection email is not guaranteed. Indeed's rejection automation, when enabled, schedules a no-reply email three days after a manual or required-screener rejection. The employer can also send a rejection message manually.
What does "Employer reviewing applications" mean on Indeed?
Indeed sets this mobile-app label when the employer is reviewing applications for the job but has not reviewed yours yet. It does not reveal your queue position, promise a review or indicate shortlisting.
What does "Response seems unlikely" mean on Indeed?
It is an Indeed-set status meaning Indeed does not expect the employer to reply. It appears in the mobile app when the employer has already hired enough candidates or when there has been no activity on your application for at least two weeks.
How long does it take for an Indeed application to be viewed?
The cited Indeed help pages give no typical time to a view. Review can happen without a visible update when an employer uses its own ATS or email. After at least two weeks without recorded activity, Indeed may show Response seems unlikely; that does not confirm rejection.
Does "Job closed" on Indeed mean I was rejected?
No. Indeed defines it as the employer closing the job or the posting expiring. It describes the listing, not an individual rejection. If an interview process is underway, ask the recruiter for its status.
Why does my Indeed application not show any status updates?
Employer and Indeed statuses are usually only available for jobs posted directly on Indeed, and Indeed-set statuses only appear in the mobile app. If the employer reviews applications in its own applicant tracking system or you applied on the company's site, check the employer's candidate portal instead.
