The layoff headline is months old. The forum alarms are fresh.
By late August, r/boston had a thread asking about September cuts. By October, people on thelayoff.com were asking whether an October RIF was coming. Meanwhile, Fidelity's five-day office mandate was adding another reason to worry.
If you work at Fidelity, or just left, the distinction matters: a confirmed job cut, an office-policy change and an anonymous prediction require different next steps.

Latest update (as of October 8, 2026)
As of October 8, no later layoff round has been announced or credibly reported. The September office-policy change is confirmed; claims that it will lead to another RIF remain unverified.
- No new layoff round has been announced or credibly reported since the May 2026 restructuring.
- No Fidelity Investments filing was found in four state WARN sources, with different cutoffs: Massachusetts October 2, Texas June 23, North Carolina October 5 and Colorado October 8, 2026.
- The five-day return to office was scheduled for September 2026 for most full-time staff in Boston, Merrimack (New Hampshire), Kentucky and New Mexico. Anonymous employee posts describe it in force. Smithfield, Rhode Island, was left out because of space constraints.
- In May, Fidelity said it planned to hire about 3,300 people in 2026, about half in technology or product roles, and to add almost 2,000 early-career workers.
- Forum threads in late August and early October 2026 asked about September and October cuts. Neither the company nor credible reporting has confirmed any.
As of October 8, 2026, the only confirmed Fidelity Investments layoff of 2026 is the May restructuring of technology and product-delivery teams: about 800 to 1,000 roles, roughly 1% of the workforce.
Before the timeline, one check saves a lot of confusion: make sure you are reading about the right Fidelity.
Which Fidelity? Fidelity Investments vs FIS, FNF and Fidelity International
Four separate companies carry the name. Search "Fidelity layoffs" and you get all of them mixed together.
| Company | What it is | Same company as Fidelity Investments? |
|---|---|---|
| Fidelity Investments | Privately held asset manager and brokerage, headquartered in Boston, founded 1946, over 80,000 associates in 11 countries (Fidelity) | This page |
| FIS (Fidelity National Information Services) | Financial technology and payments company, headquartered in Jacksonville, Florida (FIS) | No |
| FNF (Fidelity National Financial) | Title insurance and settlement services for real estate and mortgage (FNF) | No |
| Fidelity International | Asset manager that spun off from Fidelity Investments in 1980; announced about 1,000 job cuts, roughly 9% of staff, in March 2024 (Wealth Professional) | No, shared history only |
Fidelity Investments is not FIS, FNF or Fidelity International. Before trusting any Fidelity layoff headline or WARN row, check the legal company name and the city.
With the right company pinned down, the history is short.
Fidelity layoffs timeline (2023 to 2026)
Fidelity's March 2024 cuts were its first since 2017. The May 2026 round followed 26 months later.
| Date | What happened | Scale | Teams, roles, sites | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Oct 2026 (to Oct 8) | No later round announced or credibly reported | No new count verified | Forum threads ask about an October RIF; unconfirmed | Fidelity discussion board, unverified; see WARN coverage below |
| Sept 2026 | Scheduled start of five-day return to office | Most full-time staff at affected sites | Boston, Merrimack NH, Kentucky, New Mexico; Smithfield RI excluded; phone roles in office one week in four | Boston Globe, LINK nky |
| May 28, 2026 | Cuts reported at the Covington, Kentucky campus | "Several" people | Technology and delivery teams; company expects local employment to grow | Cincinnati Business Courier via Local 12 |
| May 7, 2026 | Restructuring layoff | About 800 (BBJ, Bloomberg) to about 1,000 (Boston Globe); about 1% of about 80,000 | Technology and product-delivery teams, management layers; a "small number" in Boston | BBJ via NBC Boston, Boston Globe |
| Apr 29, 2026 | Five-day return to office announced, starting September | Not a layoff | Replaces two in-office weeks out of every four | LINK nky |
| 2025 | No company-wide round reported | None | Revenue $37.7 billion, up 15% | Boston Globe |
| Sept 2024 | Hybrid "connect weeks" expand to two of every four weeks in office | Not a layoff | Most U.S. office staff, with customer-support exceptions | Boston Globe |
| Early Mar 2024 | First headcount cut since 2017 | About 700; under 1% of about 74,000 | Impact "generally proportional" to each site's headcount; Globe estimate about 55 of 5,860 Massachusetts jobs | Bloomberg via WealthManagement.com, Boston Globe |
| 2023 | No layoff round reported | None | Headcount had grown more than 50% since 2020 | Boston Globe |
Two patterns repeat. Both rounds were about 1% of staff or less. Both came with hiring announcements: nearly 2,000 open roles in 2024, and about 3,300 planned hires plus almost 2,000 early-career workers in 2026.
Fidelity Investments has made two confirmed layoff rounds since 2017: about 700 jobs in March 2024 and about 800 to 1,000 in May 2026. Each was roughly 1% of the workforce or less, and each was paired with plans to hire.
The May 2026 round is the one people are searching for. Here is what the reporting actually pins down.
Fidelity job cuts in May 2026: what was confirmed
Three newsrooms, two estimates. The Boston Business Journal and Bloomberg said about 800. The Boston Globe said roughly a thousand. All of them said about 1%.
The Patriot Ledger, citing unnamed sources, reported that many smaller, independent teams were being merged into larger teams with broader scope. A Fidelity spokesperson told the paper there were "a small number" of workforce adjustments in Boston and that the company did not expect the changes to affect its local headcount.
| Confirmed by Fidelity or credible reporting | Not confirmed (treat as rumor) |
|---|---|
| About 800 to 1,000 roles, roughly 1% of about 80,000 employees | Exact counts by site or state |
| Cuts concentrated in technology and product-delivery teams, plus management layers | An official severance formula |
| A new technology and product operating model scheduled for June 1, 2026 | Any September or October 2026 round |
| Several roles cut at the Covington, Kentucky campus (reported May 28) | A 500-person cut in India, listed as a rumor on Blind's tracker |
Where the cuts landed, site by site
No complete site-by-site layoff count was found. These are the locations covered by the reporting and WARN checks below. The 2024 Massachusetts layoff estimate is statewide, not a Boston-campus count.
| Site | Employees (reported) | Layoff reports | WARN filing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Boston, MA (HQ) | About 6,200 Boston-based employees (Boston Globe) | 2026: "a small number" of Boston adjustments, per Fidelity. 2024: Globe estimate of about 55 statewide | None found in MA reports through Oct 2, 2026 |
| Covington, KY | At least 6,000 (Fidelity); 6,184 in city tax records (LINK nky) | 2026: "several" people (Cincinnati Business Courier) | Kentucky list not reviewed |
| Merrimack, NH | No count found | No site count found | NH list not reviewed |
| Smithfield, RI | No count found | No site count found; excluded from the announced five-day RTO | RI list not reviewed |
| Westlake, TX | No count found | No site count found | None in Texas data to June 23, 2026 |
| Durham area, NC | No count found | No site count found | None in NC lists to Oct 5, 2026 |
| India | No count found | Rumor of 500 on Blind's tracker | Not applicable |
The May 2026 Fidelity layoff was company-wide but thin: about 1% of staff, mostly in technology and product delivery, with Fidelity describing the Boston impact as a small number of roles.
The scale is reported, but exact site counts remain unknown. The next question is why a company whose revenue grew 15% last year would cut at all.
Why Fidelity is cutting (in its own words)
The cuts followed a year of revenue growth. Fidelity attributed them to a change in how its teams work.
The company's explanation, attributed to unnamed spokespeople:
- To the Boston Business Journal, via NBC Boston: the changes were tied to a new technology and product-delivery model; the company denied a cost-cutting or overall headcount-reduction objective.
- To the Patriot Ledger: Fidelity wanted more early-career, hands-on engineering roles and fewer management layers.
- To the Boston Globe: AI was not part of the equation in this round.
- In 2024, after the 700-job cut, a spokesperson told Bloomberg that the decision was intended to better meet changing customer needs.
Fidelity described the 2026 cuts as a change in skills and team structure, with fewer management layers and more early-career engineering hires. That is the company's explanation, not a verified outcome for total headcount.
The WARN records answer a narrower question: which events appear in the state sources checked?
Fidelity WARN notices: what the state filings show
No Fidelity Investments filing was found in the four state sources checked for the October 8 update. Their coverage ends on different dates, and several other states were not reviewed. This is a record-search result, not proof of nationwide absence or WARN compliance.
| State (Fidelity site) | Source checked | Period covered | Fidelity Investments filings |
|---|---|---|---|
| Massachusetts (Boston HQ) | MassHire WARN reports | Fiscal 2023 through the week ending Oct 2, 2026 | None found |
| Texas (Westlake) | Texas Workforce Commission WARN dataset | Notices from Jan 2019 to Jun 23, 2026 | None found |
| North Carolina (Durham area) | NC Commerce WARN summaries | 2024, 2025, and 2026 through Oct 5, 2026 | None found |
| Colorado | CDLE WARN lists | 2023 through Oct 8, 2026 | None found |
| NH, RI, KY, UT, NM | State lists not reviewed for this update | Not established | Not established |
The latest Fidelity Investments filing located in the trackers checked is historical:
| Notice received | City, state | Workers affected | Effective layoff date | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Feb 3, 2017 | Grapevine, TX | 98 | Aug 31, 2017 | WARNTracker |
The tracker result is not an exhaustive national filing history. The Texas state dataset above starts in 2019, so it cannot independently confirm that 2017 row.
WARN coverage and severance-release requirements depend on the facts of the separation. A qualified employment attorney can assess an individual agreement or potential notice violation.
The four state sources checked contained no Fidelity Investments filing within the periods listed. The Texas data stops in June 2026, and several other states were not checked. Missing entries cannot establish whether notice was legally required.
Those records do not establish Fidelity's severance terms. The public package claims below come from forums.
Fidelity severance: what has been reported
No official Fidelity severance formula was found in the sources reviewed. The package claims below come from anonymous employee posts.
- They come from anonymous posts, not from Fidelity or a filing
- The posts do not establish a company-wide formula or a six-month maximum
- Tenure, eligibility and other terms are not independently verified; your agreement may differ
Federal rules to check alongside the package:
- If you are 40 or older: the EEOC says a valid waiver of federal age-discrimination claims in a group termination program requires at least 45 days to consider and 7 days to revoke after signing. Required disclosures include the program's eligibility criteria, time limits, and job titles and ages of people selected and not selected within the relevant decision unit.
- Health coverage: eligible employees can continue a qualifying group health plan for a limited period under COBRA, but may pay up to 102% of the plan's cost.
- If you were on leave: read Can You Be Laid Off While on FMLA? before you sign anything.
Get Fidelity's severance terms from your own separation agreement. For workers 40 or older, a valid federal age-claim waiver in a group termination program requires at least 45 days to consider and 7 days to revoke after signing.
The September layoff rumors remain unconfirmed as of October 8. The same distinction applies to October predictions.

Blind and the layoff trackers
Employee forums flagged Fidelity's May 2026 cuts the day they happened. Their September and October 2026 layoff rumors have not been confirmed by the company or by credible reporting.
Most of that autumn chatter is not really about layoffs. It is about the commute.
Fidelity return to office: the five-day mandate
The RTO order came first. Eight days later, the layoffs.
- Who: most full-time staff in Boston, Merrimack (New Hampshire), Kentucky and New Mexico.
- Who is exempt: Smithfield, Rhode Island, because of space constraints, and phone-based customer roles, which come in one week out of every four.
- Boston: in May, Boston.com reported that Fidelity would keep 245 Summer St. and expected to move workers into its Commonwealth Pier campus in the fall.
Forum posters call the mandate a way to cut without layoffs. Fidelity has not linked it to headcount targets. That link is a theory, not a fact.
Fidelity announced a five-day office policy scheduled for September 2026 for most full-time staff in Boston, Merrimack, Kentucky and New Mexico, with exceptions. The announcement does not establish another layoff round.
If your role was among the May cuts, or you are reading this with a separation letter open, the deadlines matter more than the rumors.
If you were affected: first steps
Use the dates in your separation documents to set the next steps. A forum prediction cannot tell you when your benefits or review period end.
Step 01: Get every term in writing
Ask for your separation date, severance amount, how your bonus and PTO are handled, the date your benefits end, and the deadline to sign the release. Use the email below.
Step 02: Use the full review window
For workers 40 or older, a valid waiver of federal age-discrimination claims in a group termination program requires at least 45 days to consider and 7 days to revoke after signing. Ask for the required group disclosures and consider legal review.
Step 03: Ask about internal roles before your last day
Fidelity said in May it had 2,000 open roles, 400 of them in tech or product delivery, and planned to add almost 2,000 early-career workers. Ask HR whether you can apply internally before your separation date, and whether you are eligible for rehire later.
Step 04: File for unemployment and decide on health coverage
Step 05: Message former colleagues this week
Subject: Separation details for [Your Name], [Employee ID]
Hi [HR contact], please confirm the following separation details in writing for [Your Name], [Employee ID]: (1) separation date and final paycheck date, (2) severance amount and calculation, (3) bonus and unused PTO treatment, (4) health coverage end date and when COBRA information will arrive, (5) deadline to sign the release, and (6) eligibility for internal applications before separation and for rehire afterward. Thank you, [Your Name]
After a Fidelity layoff, lock down your terms in writing first, use the full review period, and ask about internal roles before your separation date, while you are still an employee.

Is Fidelity laying off in October 2026?
As of October 8, 2026, Fidelity Investments has not announced an October 2026 layoff, and no credible outlet has reported one. Forum threads asking about an October RIF are unconfirmed. The last confirmed round began on May 7, 2026.
How many employees has Fidelity laid off in 2026?
About 800 to 1,000. The Boston Business Journal and Bloomberg reported about 800 and the Boston Globe roughly 1,000, all describing about 1% of Fidelity's roughly 80,000 employees. Cuts were concentrated in technology and product-delivery teams.
Does Fidelity give severance?
Anonymous May 2026 posts describe severance, including six months of pay, a prorated bonus and PTO; another claims ten months. No official company formula was found in the sources reviewed. These reports are unverified and do not establish a six-month maximum. Confirm your own terms in your separation agreement.
Will there be more Fidelity layoffs?
Fidelity has not announced further cuts. In May 2026 it said it planned to hire about 3,300 people that year, and a spokesperson said it planned to hire nearly twice as many engineering roles in the coming quarters. Forum rumors of later cuts remain unconfirmed.
Did Fidelity file a WARN notice for the 2026 layoffs?
None was found in the four state sources checked, within their coverage: Massachusetts through October 2, 2026; Texas through June 23; North Carolina through October 5; Colorado through October 8. Several other state lists were not reviewed. A missing entry does not prove that WARN did not apply.
Is Fidelity's return to office five days a week?
Fidelity announced five days a week for most full-time staff in Boston, Merrimack (New Hampshire), Kentucky and New Mexico, scheduled to start in September 2026. Smithfield, Rhode Island, was excluded because of space constraints, and phone-based customer roles were assigned one week out of every four.
Is FIS the same as Fidelity Investments?
No. FIS (Fidelity National Information Services) is a separate financial technology company headquartered in Jacksonville, Florida. Fidelity National Financial (FNF) and Fidelity International are also separate companies from Boston-based Fidelity Investments.
Were the Fidelity layoffs caused by AI?
According to Fidelity, no. A spokesperson told the Boston Globe that AI was not part of the equation in the May 2026 cuts, which the company tied to a new technology development and product delivery model.
