Google's latest Washington layoff letter lists software engineers, product managers, UX designers and recruiters.
It gives no reason for the cuts.
For employees, a filing supplies dates and headcounts. It cannot say whether another team will be affected, or whether a colleague's severance terms apply to them.
Those are the details that matter when a notice arrives.

Google layoffs today: latest update (October 9, 2026)
The latest verified notice found in this review covers approximately 52 Google employees in Washington. The last separations were scheduled for October 4, 2026. A search of news from the past 90 days found no later confirmed round.
Verified cuts, buyouts and related developments in 2026, newest first:
- August 5: Washington WARN notice, 52 employees. Kirkland (21), Seattle (20), Redmond (8) and remote workers (3). Employees were notified between July 8 and August 4; separation dates were September 6, September 13 and October 4. Google's letter lists engineering, product, design and recruiting roles.
- July 16: union petition delivered with more than 4,500 signatures. It asks for guaranteed severance and voluntary exits before mandatory layoffs. This is an employee demand, not a company policy. Alphabet Workers Union campaign record, The Guardian.
- Late May to early June: Google Cloud cuts, including Threat Intelligence Group and Mandiant roles; headcount undisclosed. Business Insider.
- February 10: Global Business Organization buyouts for certain US roles; large customer sales and other customer-facing roles excluded. Business Insider.
- January 26: California notice, 77 Sunnyvale positions, with separations scheduled March 15 to April 12. EDD received it January 27. California EDD.
Google Cloud layoffs: what is confirmed?
Cloud reductions are not limited to 2026. CNBC reported at least 100 roles affected in late May 2024, an undisclosed, small number in February 2025 and more than 100 design roles in October 2025. The timeline below links each report. The 50-person Sunnyvale notice from September 2025 is a site count, not the full Cloud total; the records do not establish its overlap with that report.
An October 7, 2026 Blind post alleges exits for Cloud's bottom 2% of performers. It remains unverified: no corroborating report from a named news outlet was found as of October 9. It is excluded from the confirmed counts.
The verified 2026 record contains local cuts, Cloud reductions and buyouts. It does not provide a company-wide layoff total.
Google job cuts: timeline from 2023 to 2026
The table distinguishes layoffs, buyout offers and management-role reductions. Dates refer to an announcement or notice unless marked as a reporting date; WARN separation dates appear in the next table. Counts can overlap, so these rows must not be added together. Historical cuts at other Alphabet businesses are listed separately.

The August 2025 cuts of more than 200 AI raters hit employees of GlobalLogic rather than direct Google employees, according to Wired. Staffing-company employees should check their own employment and separation agreements.
Since January 2023, Google has cut jobs in small rounds almost every quarter, often without a disclosed headcount. Buyout eligibility and fewer management roles are different measures from employees laid off.
Google buyouts and voluntary exit programs
Buyouts became another route out of Google in January 2025. Pichai said they followed employee requests for an alternative to blanket layoffs (CNBC).
| Announced | Organization | Who was eligible | Reported terms | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Feb 10, 2026 | Global Business Organization | Certain US roles; large customer sales and other customer-facing roles excluded | Severance amount not reported | Business Insider |

| Jan 30, 2025 | Platforms and Devices | US full-time employees; enrollment closed February 20 | Not published | CNBC, The Verge |
In August 2025, CNBC reported VEP offers in 10 product areas, with 3% to 5% of employees on those teams accepting. By October, the union counted nearly 70,000 eligible employees, according to the SF Chronicle. Eligibility is not a departure count. YouTube also said its October reorganization involved no role eliminations, according to TechCrunch.
Some offers came with conditions. In June 2025, CNBC reported that some teams told remote workers living within 50 miles of an office to return to a hybrid schedule.
| Voluntary exit program (VEP) | Involuntary layoff |
|---|---|
| The employee opts in during an enrollment window | The employer selects roles for elimination |
| Eligibility and terms vary by organization | WARN coverage depends on thresholds, location and timing |
| Reported HR terms: 14 weeks plus one week per full service year (2025) | Official historical terms: 16 weeks plus two weeks per additional year (January 2023) |
| Check state unemployment eligibility before accepting | Check state filing rules and the separation date |
The employee's own offer letter determines a buyout's cash, equity and benefit terms. Another team's package is only a comparison.
Google WARN notices by state
WARN records document planned separations by site. They are notices, not a tally of every employee who ultimately left.
Records reviewed from January 2023 to October 9, 2026 appear below. Entries sharing a notice date are grouped across buildings. These are 14 groups of records, not 14 individual filings or separate layoff rounds. The final California row includes a contemporaneous news count that differs from EDD's summary.

CNBC reported 1,845 California positions from Google's filings at the time. EDD's year-end summary contains 953 positions across 40 Google address entries. The summary does not explain the difference. Neither figure should be presented as a verified revision of the other, or added to the 12,000-role announcement, which already includes California.
The August 2026 Washington letter says affected employees continue receiving pay and benefits due until termination. This describes that round; employees in other rounds should confirm their own employment end date and paid-notice terms.
WARN, severance, unemployment, leave and immigration outcomes depend on the employee's location and circumstances. An employment or immigration attorney can assess an individual notice or agreement.
The California and Washington records document 129 positions in 2026. Missing filings do not prove that no cuts occurred, and these records are not a complete Google layoff total.
Why Google keeps cutting while it keeps hiring
Alphabet had 198,933 employees on June 30, 2026, up 8,699 from December 2022. A growing parent-company headcount can coexist with cuts at individual Google teams.
| Date | Alphabet employees | Change |
|---|---|---|
| Dec 31, 2022 | 190,234 | Before the January 2023 layoff |
| Dec 31, 2023 | 182,502 | Down 7,732 in a year |
| Dec 31, 2024 | 183,323 | Up 821 |
| Dec 31, 2025 | 190,820 | Up 7,497 |
| Jun 30, 2026 | 198,933 | Up 11,830 from June 30, 2025 |
What Google's leaders have said, year by year:
- 2023: "We hired for a different economic reality than the one we face today," Pichai wrote in the January 20, 2023 memo announcing about 12,000 cuts.
- 2024: "To create the capacity for this investment, we have to make tough choices," Pichai wrote in January, saying the cuts would be smaller than the previous year's (The Verge). December's report of 10% fewer leadership roles described a multiyear effort, including conversions to nonmanagerial jobs (Business Insider).
- 2025: The 35% reduction referred to managers overseeing fewer than three people; many stayed as individual contributors (CNBC). Search chief Nick Fox said his buyout aimed for commitment, "not to achieve a headcount target," and that many departed roles would be backfilled (The Verge).
- 2026: Business chief Philipp Schindler emphasized commitment and AI adoption (Business Insider). On the April 29 earnings call, CFO Anat Ashkenazi said Alphabet expected to keep hiring in AI and Cloud while pursuing efficiency. Capital spending guidance rose to $180 billion to $190 billion on that call.
Together, these statements suggest a shift in priorities and management structure. They do not establish that AI caused every cut, or identify which teams will be affected next.
Alphabet's net headcount growth does not contradict individual Google cuts. Management-role reductions also do not equal layoffs of the same number of people.
Google severance package: official and reported terms
Google published the following US terms for its January 2023 round. Later reported buyout terms differ; the historical package should not be treated as a standing policy.
- Pay during the full notification period, minimum 60 days
- Severance starting at 16 weeks of salary plus two weeks for every additional year at Google
- At least 16 weeks of GSU vesting accelerated
- 2022 bonus and remaining vacation time paid
- 6 months of healthcare, job placement services and immigration support
- Outside the US: support in line with local practices
What has been reported since:
- People Operations buyout (February 2025): 14 weeks of salary plus one additional week for every full year of service, for levels L4 and L5 (CNBC).
- Some June 2025 buyouts: a minimum of 14 weeks of pay, with a July 1 enrollment deadline (The Verge).
- Later involuntary layoffs: No uniform current formula was found in the reviewed sources. The union's job-security petition asks for a guaranteed minimum matching January 2023; it is a request, not an agreed benefit.
- The 2023 formula was for that round; later rounds and buyouts have used different terms
- If the agreement includes a release of legal claims, check the review and signing deadlines
- Outside the US, local law and the employee's agreement determine the terms
- Confirm which GSU grants vest before separation and whether any vesting is accelerated
Notice pay, severance, equity and health coverage are separate parts of an offer. The employee's current written agreement is the relevant package.
Google vs other Alphabet companies
| Company | Date | What happened | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Waymo | Jan and Mar 2023 | 137 cut in March and 209 in total by then, per The Information; a 112-person Mountain View WARN notice dated Mar 1, 2023 | 9to5Google, CA EDD 2022-23 |
| Verily | Jan 11, 2023 | About 15% of staff, more than 200 jobs; a 119-person South San Francisco WARN notice | Bloomberg, CA EDD 2022-23 |
| Intrinsic | Jan 2023 | About 40 jobs, roughly 20% | Robotics 24/7 |
| X (moonshot lab) | Jan 2024 | Dozens of jobs, mainly support staff | Engadget |
The employer and the date matter. Historical Other Bets cuts should not be folded into a Google-only timeline or used to infer Google's severance terms.
What Google employees are saying (unverified)
After a Google layoff: first steps
An employee's notice and agreement supply the dates that matter. The first task is to put separation, transfer, equity and benefits deadlines on one calendar.
Step 01: Separate notification from the employment end date
The August 2026 Washington letter describes continued employment and pay until termination. Each employee should confirm their own last day, final paycheck date and treatment of unused vacation in writing.
Step 02: Check the internal transfer deadline
Google has repeatedly let affected employees apply for other Google roles. CNBC reported that some October 2025 Cloud employees had until early December to find a new internal role. That deadline was specific to those employees; HR should confirm the applicable window before applications begin.
Step 03: Map equity and bonus payments against separation
A list of GSU grants and upcoming vest dates makes the equity question concrete. Google's 2023 acceleration terms do not establish what applies to a later exit; HR should confirm the current terms in writing.
Step 04: Confirm immigration deadlines before employment ends
Step 05: Check unemployment and health coverage options
Step 06: Leave the door open
CNBC reported in December 2025 that about 20% of the AI software engineers Google hired in 2025 were former employees. That is evidence of hiring former staff, not a guarantee that a laid-off employee is eligible for rehire. Former managers and teammates can remain useful references.
An interview explanation can name the restructuring, then move to a verifiable accomplishment and the role being sought.
My team at Google was part of a [team or organization] restructuring in [month and year], and my role was eliminated along with [number] others. Before that, I [a specific accomplishment, with a measured result if available]. I am looking for a role where I can do more of [skill], which is why this position stands out to me.
Separation, transfer, equity, benefits and immigration dates belong on one calendar. None should be assumed from another employee's package.
- 01The reviewed 2026 California and Washington notices cover 129 positions; this is a subset, not a company total.
- 02Undisclosed Cloud cuts, voluntary departures and management-role changes must not be combined into an invented headcount.
- 03Alphabet's consolidated headcount growth does not measure Google-only hiring or departures.
- 04Historical severance terms and anonymous forum claims do not determine an employee's current rights or package.
FAQ
Is Google laying off in October 2026?
The Washington notice scheduled its final separations for October 4, 2026. No later confirmed round was found as of October 9. The October 7 Blind claim about Cloud performance exits remains unverified and is excluded from the article's counts.
How many employees has Google laid off in 2026?
No company-wide total was found. The California and Washington records list 129 positions, while the reviewed 2026 Cloud report and buyout reports do not disclose departure counts. The WARN subset should not be presented as Google's total.
Does Google give severance?
Yes. Google published a US severance package for January 2023, and later buyouts also included severance. Terms vary by round and organization. The current written offer, including cash, equity and health coverage, matters more than a historical formula.
Will there be more Google layoffs?
The reviewed sources do not establish a future date, team or count. Leadership has discussed efficiency and continued AI and Cloud hiring, but those statements are not a layoff announcement. The article does not forecast another round.
How many people did Google lay off in 2023?
The January 20, 2023 announcement covered approximately 12,000 roles, about 6% of Alphabet's workforce. Smaller Google cuts followed later that year. California's contemporaneous news count and EDD year-end summary differ, so the WARN table shows both without inventing an explanation.
Is Google Cloud laying off employees?
Yes. The latest verified Cloud report reviewed describes cuts in late May and early June 2026, including cybersecurity teams, without a headcount. Earlier rounds and their reported counts appear in the timeline. The October 2026 forum claim remains unverified.
Are Waymo and Verily layoffs part of Google layoffs?
Their historical cuts are listed separately from Google's. Current ownership also matters: Intrinsic joined Google in February 2026, while Alphabet gave up control of Verily after its March 2026 funding round. Those changes do not reclassify earlier layoffs or establish shared severance terms.
Does Google rehire laid-off employees?
Google hires former employees: CNBC reported, with company confirmation, that they made up about 20% of its AI software-engineering hires in 2025. That does not establish eligibility for every laid-off employee; HR must confirm the individual's status.
