Apple Layoffs 2026: Latest Cuts, Timeline & WARN Notices

Short answer

Apple layoffs 2026: 200+ Siri and Vision Pro roles cut, a 147-job California WARN notice, store closures. Does Apple do layoffs? Every verified cut since 2023.

Seventy-nine positions at One Apple Park Way, Cupertino. Forty at 605 West Maude Avenue, Sunnyvale. Twenty-eight more at 599 North Mathilda Avenue.

That is what Apple's layoff notice to California lists. It is dated August 20, 2026. The separation date is October 19.

Apple is the big tech company that skipped the 2023 layoff wave. Its CEO called mass layoffs "a last resort." Now there are state filings, a new CEO and a steady stream of reports about which team is next.

If you work there, a rumor and a filing look the same in your feed. They are not the same thing.

The newest verified Apple layoff notice took effect on October 19, 2026. It covered 147 positions in three Silicon Valley buildings, and it was dated the same week Bloomberg reported more than 200 cuts. No new Apple filing or announced round turned up between October 9 and October 30.

Verified 2026 cuts and related events, newest first:

  • October 9 to 30: no new notice or announcement. California's WARN report, updated through October 28, lists no Apple entry beyond the August notice (California EDD). Maryland's 2026 log, with entries through October 29, lists only the April store notice (Maryland DOL). Apple filed no 8-K reporting exit or disposal costs.
  • October 19: California separation date. The effective date for all 147 positions in the August notice (California EDD).
  • September 29 (reported): engineering program managers removed. Over the previous two weeks, Apple's hardware engineering group dismissed a number of engineering program managers, including about six directors. They have weeks to find other internal roles; those who do not could be laid off later this year, according to Bloomberg (The Next Web). Apple declined to comment.
  • September 20 (reported): Fitness+ cuts. A small number of staff working on audio features, including Time to Walk and Time to Run, were laid off. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman wrote that he did not believe the service was on the "chopping block" (9to5Mac).
  • September 1: new CEO. John Ternus, previously senior vice president of hardware engineering, became CEO; Tim Cook became executive chair (Apple 8-K).
  • August 20: California WARN notice, 147 positions. Cupertino (79) and two Sunnyvale buildings (40 and 28), all with an October 19 effective date. EDD received it August 21 (California EDD).
  • August 20 to 21: more than 200 roles cut. About 100 in the Vision Pro group, where a gaming team is largely being shut down and Immersive Video is being scaled back, and about 100 across Siri, software and the Intelligent Systems Experience team (9to5Mac, MacRumors).
  • April 9: three US store closures announced for June. Towson (Maryland), North County in Escondido (California) and Trumbull (Connecticut). WARN notices dated April 23 list 135 workers at the first two (9to5Mac, Maryland DOL, California EDD).

Apple's statement on the August cuts: "While we will create new roles as part of this change, it will also impact a limited number of existing roles." California's current WARN spreadsheet, covering July 1 to October 28, 2026, lists no other Apple entry.

Some late-October coverage put Apple's cuts since August at more than 400 roles (Gulf News). That figure adds up separate media reports that may overlap, and Apple has not confirmed it, so it is not used in this tracker.
Key Takeaway

Apple's 2026 layoffs are a series of team-level cuts, store closures and reorganizations, not one announced company-wide round. The latest verified separation date is October 19, 2026.

That answers "what is happening now." The harder question is whether any of it is unusual for Apple.

On an H-1B or OPT?

On a work visa? Your 60-day clock
If you are on H-1B, H-1B1, L-1, O-1, TN, E-1, E-2 or E-3, the current rule gives you and your dependents a discretionary grace period of up to 60 consecutive days after your employment ends, or until your I-94 ends if that comes first. It starts the day after your last day of employment, and it does not authorize work. 8 CFR 214.1(l)(2), checked October 30, 2026.
DHS proposed removing this grace period on September 11, 2026. As of October 30, 2026 it is still only a proposal: no final rule has been published, and comments close November 10, 2026. If it is adopted as proposed, there would be no grace period: you would be out of status from the day after your job ends unless you are otherwise authorized to stay.
Work out your dates with the grace period calculator, then read what the proposal would change and what to do now.

If your employment at Apple is ending, request the actual employment end date and immigration documents from HR first. Review the I-94, approval notices and any salary-continuation or severance arrangement with immigration counsel; do not calculate from the date a payment reaches your bank.

OPT follows a different clock: initial post-completion OPT has a 90-day aggregate unemployment limit; students granted the STEM extension have a combined 150-day limit including initial OPT. Source: 8 CFR 214.2(f)(10)(ii)(E), checked October 30, 2026. Contact your DSO, report the change and reconcile the actual employment record using the OPT unemployment guide and date tool. A future offer does not establish qualifying work before it begins. This is general information, not legal advice.
For help running applications, compare H-1B search support, OPT search support and pricing.

Does Apple do layoffs? The record since 1997

Apple went through 2023 without a mass layoff while Google cut about 12,000 roles. That record is real. It is also incomplete.

In May 2023, Tim Cook told CNBC: "I view that as a last resort and, so, mass layoffs is not something that we're talking about at this moment" (CNBC). He did not rule cuts out. Smaller ones kept coming.

Google's figure comes from its CEO's memo, Intuit's from its 8-K. Apple's share uses its September 2023 headcount. The Google layoffs tracker and Intuit layoffs tracker list those companies' later rounds.

Apple's SEC filings tell the same story. None of its 8-K reports since October 2022 covers exit or disposal costs, and none of its 10-K or 10-Q reports since then discloses a restructuring plan or severance charge.

Key Takeaway

Apple does lay off employees, but since 2023 only in targeted rounds of dozens to a few hundred roles. Its largest filing in that period, 614 positions in 2024, was about 0.4% of its workforce.

Small is not the same as safe. The full list shows how many teams have been hit.

Reported, but not layoffs

Bloomberg reported that Apple drew up a plan over the summer of 2026 to cut about 5,000 AppleCare support jobs and use AI agents instead. The plan is on hold and Apple is not pursuing it, according to the same report. It is excluded from the counts above.

Key Takeaway

Since January 2023, Apple has made at least eight verified rounds of job cuts. Every one hit a specific team, project or site, and none exceeded 614 positions.

News reports describe the cuts. State filings are where the dates and headcounts become official.

Apple WARN notices by state

A WARN notice is the most reliable record of an Apple layoff. It names a site, a headcount and a date.

Those thresholds come from California EDD's WARN guidance. Records found for this review:

The August 2026 notice is dated the day the first Vision Pro layoff report appeared. The records do not say whether its 147 positions are part of Bloomberg's 200-plus count, so adding the two would risk double counting.

A closure notice is not a job-loss count

The Escondido record lists a permanent closure, yet Apple said its North County staff would continue their roles at nearby Apple stores. Towson employees could only apply for open roles under their union contract. A WARN count shows who received notice, not who ultimately lost a job.

Coverage limits: California's annual reports for July 2022 to June 2023 and July 2024 to June 2025 contain no Apple entry. Maryland's 2023 to 2025 lists contain none. Texas's state WARN dataset, whose latest receipt is June 23, 2026, lists no Apple notice. Washington, New York and Connecticut records were not retrievable for this review. Small rounds can also fall below WARN thresholds and never appear in a state list.
How WARN rules work
Thresholds, the 60-day rule and back pay when an employer skips notice are explained in the Texas mass layoffs and WARN notices guide. The federal rules apply in every state.
Key Takeaway

State records document 282 Apple positions in 2026 and 735 in 2024. These are notices, not a complete layoff total, and missing filings do not prove that no cuts occurred.

Filings show where and when. They never say why.

Why Apple is cutting jobs in 2026

Each recent round traces back to a specific product, sales or management decision, according to Apple's statements and Bloomberg's reporting.

RoundReason given or reportedSource
Vision Pro, Aug 2026Apple is focusing on smart glasses that would not support immersive video or advanced gaming; employees were told Vision Pro and visionOS are not going away9to5Mac

Program managers, Sep 2026The new CEO wants to release products more often and cut layers of management; headcount held flat and marketing spending cut in 2027 planningThe Next Web, citing Bloomberg

Headcount helps explain the small scale. CNBC noted in 2023 that Apple hired more slowly than rivals during the pandemic, and its annual reports show little net growth since then:

If your role touches AI
The AI layoffs survival guide covers which functions are being cut across the industry and which pivots are working.
Key Takeaway

Apple's recent cuts follow product and channel decisions (Vision Pro, Siri, enterprise sales, mall stores), not a cost-cutting percentage. A flat headcount plan is a hiring signal, not a layoff announcement.

The reason for a cut matters less on the day notice arrives. The terms matter more.

Apple severance: what laid-off employees were offered

Apple has never published a severance formula. What exists is round-by-round reporting, and one pattern repeats: an internal job search window comes first.

Under the 2024 San Diego formula, five years of service meant nine weeks of pay. That is one data point from one round, not a promise. To compare an offer with common formulas and see what is negotiable, read how severance pay works.
Before signing an Apple separation agreement
  • A past round's formula does not bind the current one; the written offer controls
  • Employees aged 40 or older in a group termination generally get at least 45 days to consider a release of age claims and 7 days to revoke it (29 CFR 1625.22)
  • Confirm which RSUs vest before the separation date and whether any are forfeited
  • If the layoff is covered by California WARN, check that the notice date and separation date are at least 60 days apart
Key Takeaway

Apple's reported pattern is internal search first, severance second. The length of the internal window has ranged from a few weeks to about two months.

The official record is thin on terms. Employee forums fill the gap with guesses.

What Apple employees are saying (unverified)

An anonymous Blind thread posted August 20, 2026 discusses the Vision Pro and Siri cuts. Its AI-generated comment summary, which Blind labels unverified, shows three themes: commenters linking the layoffs to the new CEO, doubts about Siri's future given Apple's use of Google's Gemini technology, and the view that Vision Pro is promising but held back by its price and hardware.
TheLayoff.com's Apple board mostly reposts news coverage and product complaints, with little first-hand detail on the 2026 rounds as of October 30. On reddit, the r/technology thread on Bloomberg's report of the 2025 sales cuts collected reactions to that round.

Anonymous posts are leads, not evidence. None of them establishes a future layoff date, team or count.

Laid off by Apple? First steps

The first week sets up the next three months. Recent Apple rounds have come with up to three dates: a notice date, an internal search deadline and a separation date.

Step 01: Get all three dates in writing

Ask HR for the notice date, the internal application deadline and the last day of employment. Apple's reported windows have ranged from a few weeks (2026 program managers) to 60 days (2024 Services cuts).

Step 02: Treat the internal window as a real job search

In 2025, Apple said it was continuing to hire and affected employees could apply for new roles. Former managers who know the work are the strongest internal references, so contact them in the first days of the window.

Step 03: Map equity and benefits against the separation date

List every RSU vest date and compare it with the last day of employment. Then compare continued coverage options: COBRA continuation coverage and Marketplace plans.

Step 04: File for unemployment as soon as eligible

CareerOneStop's state-agency finder gives the right filing contact. Laid off vs fired explains why the recorded reason for separation matters to the claim.

Step 05: Visa holders: confirm the grace period before the last day

H-1B, L-1, O-1, TN and certain other workers may qualify for a discretionary grace period of up to 60 consecutive days, or until the authorized stay ends if sooner (8 CFR 214.1(l)(2)). An immigration attorney can confirm the start date and options.

In interviews, name the restructuring, then move to a result and the role you want:

Interview answer: explaining an Apple layoff
My role at Apple was eliminated in [month and year] when the company restructured [team, for example the Vision Pro group or enterprise sales].

Before that, I [one specific accomplishment, with a measured result].

I am looking for a role where I can keep doing [skill], which is why this position stands out to me.

General information, not legal advice

WARN, severance, unemployment and immigration outcomes depend on location and individual circumstances. An employment or immigration attorney can review a specific notice or agreement.

Key Takeaway

Most Apple layoff rounds since 2024 have come with an internal search window or a transfer offer. That window is a full job search, not a waiting period.

FAQ

FAQ

Is Apple laying off in October 2026?

Separations under Apple's August California WARN notice, covering 147 positions in Cupertino and Sunnyvale, took effect on October 19, 2026. Bloomberg also reported that hardware program managers who do not find internal roles could be laid off later in 2026. No new round or WARN notice had been confirmed as of October 30.

How many employees has Apple laid off in 2026?

Apple has not published a total. State WARN records list 282 positions, and Bloomberg reported more than 200 August cuts that may overlap the California notice. Together that is a few hundred roles, well under 1% of Apple's roughly 166,000 employees.

Does Apple give severance?

Yes, according to reporting on individual rounds, but Apple publishes no standing formula. In 2024, San Diego employees who declined to relocate were offered four weeks of pay plus one week per year worked and six months of health insurance. Sales employees in 2025 received a severance package if they had no internal role by January 20, 2026.

Will there be more Apple layoffs?

Apple has announced none. Bloomberg reported in September 2026 that some program managers could be laid off later in the year, that Fitness+ staff see the cuts as the start of more cost-cutting, and that a plan to cut about 5,000 AppleCare jobs is on hold. Apple declined to comment.

Has Apple ever had mass layoffs?

Yes, in the 1990s. In March 1997, under CEO Gil Amelio, Apple announced 4,100 job cuts, about 2,700 employees plus 1,400 contractors and temps. Since 2023, its largest filing covered 614 California positions after the car project ended in 2024.

How many employees does Apple have?

Apple had approximately 166,000 full-time equivalent employees on September 27, 2025, according to its annual report, up from about 164,000 a year earlier.

Is Apple in a hiring freeze?

Apple has announced no hiring freeze. Bloomberg reported in September 2026 that headcount is being held flat in 2027 planning. In November 2025, Apple said it was continuing to hire while cutting sales roles.

Did Apple lay off workers when it canceled the Apple car?

Yes. A WARN notice dated March 28, 2024 listed 614 positions at eight Santa Clara sites, effective May 27, 2024, weeks after Apple canceled the car project. Some car engineers were offered other roles. An earlier 2019 notice listed 190 car-project positions.
