97,000. That was Dell's headcount on January 30, 2026. Three years earlier, it was 133,000.
That is 36,000 fewer jobs at a company headquartered in Round Rock, Texas. Texas has no WARN notice from Dell on file in that period. The last SEC filing in which Dell announced a layoff is dated February 2023.
So rumors fill the gap. A forum thread says 6,000 to 15,000. A Reddit post says 4,000, today. A tracker says 5,000, completed.
If you work at Dell, the only official clues sit in footnotes of quarterly filings. Here is what they actually say.

Dell layoffs today: latest update (as of October 30, 2026)
Dell's revenue hit a record $47.0 billion in its latest reported quarter, up 58% year over year. Its severance bill went up too.
- September 8, 2026: Dell's 10-Q for the quarter ended July 31 recorded $261 million in severance charges, versus $204 million a year earlier. Of that, $149 million sat in research and development. Severance still owed at quarter end: $339 million, up from $211 million a year earlier.
- September 1, 2026: the second-quarter results reported record revenue of $47.0 billion and raised full-year guidance to $192 billion. The release gives no headcount.
- August to September 2026: forum and social posts claimed cuts of 4,000 to 15,000 people. No Dell statement, 8-K or state WARN notice confirming any of those numbers was found.
- October 21, 2026: Dell's latest 8-K reported that general counsel Richard Rothberg will retire effective February 1, 2027, with Christopher Garcia succeeding him. The other 8-Ks filed since the July 31 10-Q cover a bond offering; none describes a workforce reduction.
- October 30, 2026 check: Texas's 2026 WARN list (notices through October 27), California's current report (processed through October 28), North Carolina's 2026 list (through October 23) and Tennessee's 2026 postings (through October 20) contain no Dell entry. No new Dell round was reported by the company or a news outlet between October 9 and October 30.
Dell's 2026 layoffs show up as severance charges in SEC filings, not as an announced round. Severance charges in the first half of fiscal 2027 were $488 million, 46% higher than the $334 million recorded a year earlier.
A severance line tells you money left the building. The timeline shows how that bill built up since 2023.

If your employment at Dell is ending, request the actual employment end date and immigration documents from HR first. Review the I-94, approval notices and any salary-continuation or severance arrangement with immigration counsel; do not calculate from the date a payment reaches your bank.
Dell layoffs timeline, 2023 to 2026

Dell employees at fiscal year end
Approximate headcount reported in Dell's annual reports
From fiscal 2023 through July 2026, Dell recorded about $2.9 billion in severance charges. These are worldwide, accounting-period costs, so they cannot be divided by the headcount drop to get an average package.
Dell's headcount fell about 10% in each of three consecutive fiscal years, from about 133,000 in February 2023 to about 97,000 in January 2026. The decline is a net figure that includes layoffs, attrition and reduced hiring, not a count of layoffs.
Dell layoffs 2025 and 2026, quarter by quarter
Annual headcount hides the rhythm. Quarterly severance charges show it:
| Quarter ended | Fiscal quarter | Severance charges | A year earlier |
|---|---|---|---|
| May 2, 2025 | Q1 fiscal 2026 | $130M | $92M |
| Aug 1, 2025 | Q2 fiscal 2026 | $204M | $328M |
| Oct 31, 2025 | Q3 fiscal 2026 | $115M | $145M |
| Jan 30, 2026 | Q4 fiscal 2026 | $120M | $128M |
| May 1, 2026 | Q1 fiscal 2027 | $227M | $130M |
| Jul 31, 2026 | Q2 fiscal 2027 | $261M | $204M |
The $120 million and $128 million fourth-quarter figures are derived: the fiscal-year total in the annual report minus the first three quarters reported in the 10-Qs.
Two patterns stand out. Severance peaked in the May-to-July quarter in both 2024 ($328 million) and 2025 ($204 million), around the time of the August 2024 and August 2025 sales cuts. And the two 2026 quarters are the highest pair in this table, running $154 million above the same quarters of 2025.
Severance is recorded when a payout becomes probable and estimable, so a quarter's charge can include people told earlier or leaving later. The pattern describes when Dell booked costs, not the exact week anyone lost a job.
Dell's quarterly severance charges rose from $130 million and $204 million in the first half of 2025 to $227 million and $261 million in the first half of 2026. Rising severance with no layoff announcement is how Dell's cuts have shown up since the February 2023 filing.
The numbers say how much. Dell's own explanations, and where the severance is booked, say why and who.
Why Dell keeps cutting jobs
Dell has given the same reason, in nearly the same words, for three years.
What changed is the backdrop:
- 2023: a PC slump. Clarke's February 2023 memo said earlier steps, including a pause on external hiring, were "no longer enough." CNBC reported that Dell's computer shipments fell 37% in the fourth quarter of 2022.
- 2024: a sales overhaul. An internal memo from sales leaders Bill Scannell and John Byrne, reported by SiliconANGLE, said: "We are getting leaner. We're streamlining layers of management and reprioritizing where we invest."
- 2025 and 2026: an AI server boom. Headcount still fell about 10% in fiscal 2026. In the quarter ended July 31, 2026, Dell booked a record $60.9 billion in AI server orders, and its severance charges still rose year over year.
Unfortunately, with changes like this, some members of our team will be leaving the company. There is no tougher decision, but one we had to make for our long-term health and success.
Where the cuts land: sales first, now engineering
Dell splits its severance charges by income-statement line. Selling, general and administrative (SG&A) covers sales and corporate functions. Research and development (R&D) expenses are primarily personnel costs for product development, according to Dell's filings.
| Period | Cost of revenue | SG&A | R&D | Total | R&D share |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fiscal 2024 | $86M | $522M | $40M | $648M | 6% |
| Fiscal 2025 | $155M | $419M | $119M | $693M | 17% |
| Fiscal 2026 | $142M | $297M | $130M | $569M | 23% |
| Feb to Jul 2026 | $106M | $193M | $189M | $488M | 39% |
| May to Jul 2026 | $25M | $87M | $149M | $261M | 57% |
These are dollars, not people: severance per person varies with pay and tenure. Still, the direction is clear: in fiscal 2024, eight of every ten severance dollars sat in SG&A. In the latest quarter, more than half sat in R&D.
Dell's severance charges have shifted from sales and administration toward engineering. R&D accounted for 6% of severance charges in fiscal 2024 and 57% in the quarter ended July 31, 2026.
So the cuts are spread across teams and states. That pattern helps explain why the state layoff databases show so little.
Dell WARN notices: why the public record is almost empty
A WARN notice is the most specific public record of a layoff. For Dell, there is almost nothing to find.
Here is what this review checked on October 30, 2026:
| State | Records checked | Period covered | Dell entries found |
|---|---|---|---|
| Texas (Round Rock, Austin) | TWC WARN dataset and 2026 list | Jan 2019 to Oct 27, 2026 | None |
| California | EDD annual reports and current workbook | Jul 2022 to Oct 28, 2026 | None |
| Massachusetts | FY2026 WARN report | Jul 2025 to Jun 2026 | None (no Dell, EMC or VMware) |
| North Carolina | 2026 WARN summary list | Jan to Oct 23, 2026 | None |
| Tennessee | WARN notice listings | Jan 2024 to Oct 20, 2026 | None |
Why so few notices? An Oklahoma Employment Security Commission spokesperson told The Oklahoman that large corporations rarely disclose WARN notices for local offices, and that a company cutting people across locations may conclude it does not qualify for a notice. Dell has not explained its own WARN decisions publicly.
- It does not mean no layoffs happened. Dell's own filings show about 36,000 fewer jobs and about $2.9 billion in severance charges since fiscal 2023.
- It can mean no single site crossed the federal threshold within the relevant period, or that the employer concluded none did.
- If you believe a covered layoff happened at your site without notice, an employment lawyer can assess whether WARN applied and what remedies exist.
Dell layoffs in Round Rock and Austin
Round Rock is where Dell datelines its earnings releases, and Central Texas is where many readers of this page work. The public record there is thin:
- State data: the Texas Workforce Commission dataset (notices from January 2019) and the 2026 list (through October 27, 2026) contain no Dell notice. The only related entry is the 2023 VMware notice above, filed after the spin-off.
- 2024 sales reorganization: KXAN reported the commission had received no Dell notice, and Dell did not say how many people were let go.
- 2025 sales cuts: CRN's review of public posts placed affected employees in Round Rock, alongside Michigan, Illinois, Tennessee and Massachusetts.
If you are in Round Rock or Austin, the practical consequence is simple: do not wait for a WARN list to confirm what your manager told you. Your notification and your agreement are the record.
No Dell WARN notice was found in Texas, California, Massachusetts, North Carolina or Tennessee records covering most of 2023 to October 2026. Federal WARN applies site by site, so spread-out cuts can leave little public trace.
Without a WARN notice, there is no public 60-day clock. That puts more weight on the one document you do get: the separation agreement.
Dell severance: what is known
Dell does not publish a severance formula, and no credible current report of one was found. What is documented:
- Total spending. Severance charges were $648 million in fiscal 2024, $693 million in fiscal 2025, $569 million in fiscal 2026 and $488 million from February to July 2026, per Dell's 10-K and 10-Q filings.
- Conditions. An employee told The Oklahoman in August 2024 that people affected by that round signed a "non-disparagement agreement" as a condition of receiving severance pay. That is one anonymous account, not a published policy.
- Global mix. In February 2023, about 32% of Dell's employees were in the United States, so the charges cover packages in many countries with different legal minimums.
Severance terms, release language and WARN obligations depend on the facts and applicable law. An employment lawyer can review an individual agreement before you sign it.
Dell spends hundreds of millions of dollars a year on severance but publishes no formula. Your separation agreement is the only document that sets your terms, so get every number and condition in writing before you sign.
Severance decides how long the runway is. For many people still at Dell, the bigger daily question has been where they are allowed to work.
Dell return to office: the RTO timeline
Dell's office rules tightened in four steps over about a year. None of them is a layoff, but they changed who is eligible for what.
| Date | Who | Rule | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| March 2024 | Sales | In the office at least three days a week | The Register |
| May 2024 | Fully remote employees | Staff classified as hybrid or remote; Business Insider reported fully remote staff would no longer be eligible for promotion | TechRadar |
| September 2024 | Sales | Five days a week | The Register |
| March 3, 2025 | Hybrid and remote staff who live near a Dell office | Five days a week; hybrid policy retired. Remote workers farther from an office could stay remote | The Register |
The March 2025 rule came in a January 31, 2025 email from Michael Dell. The memo, as quoted by The Register, said: "We are retiring the hybrid policy effective that day."
Did RTO push people out? A source told The Register there had been "a trickle of layoffs all year," but it was unclear whether office rules had driven people to quit. Dell has not tied its RTO policy to its headcount numbers.
Since March 3, 2025, Dell employees who live near a Dell office are expected to work there five days a week. Fully remote status was reported in 2024 to make employees ineligible for promotion, so confirm your classification in writing.
The official record ends there. The unofficial one is much louder.
What Dell employees are saying (unverified)
These are anonymous posts, not company statements or employment records. They cannot establish the size of a round, an individual's benefits or the timing of future cuts.
- TheLayoff.com: on the Dell board, an August 12, 2026 thread is titled "Rumor of Dell layoffs from 6000 to 15000 people." A rumor's title is not evidence of a round. On October 28, 2026, an anonymous post titled "Big Changes to UK/Ireland" claimed that more than 80 medium- and small-business sales staff in India were let go the day they were told.
- Reddit: an r/Layoffs thread titled "Dell lays off 4000 people today" says IT and software engineering teams were affected.
- Blind: the user-submitted Dell layoff tracker lists 2026 entries including "5,000, global, completed" dated August 3, 2026, plus several entries marked as rumors. Blind's Dell discussions cover severance packages and impacted teams.
One filed fact lines up with the engineering posts: R&D severance jumped to $149 million in the quarter ended July 31, 2026. It gives no headcount, so it cannot confirm 4,000, 5,000 or 15,000.
A rumor is not a filing. The filings themselves are the better forecast.
Will there be more Dell layoffs?
Dell has not announced a date or a number. But the wording of its filings has changed, and the change is worth reading closely:
| Filing | What Dell said about headcount |
|---|---|
| 10-Q, quarter ended Aug 2, 2024 | "We anticipate these actions will result in a continued reduction in our overall headcount." |
| 10-Qs, quarters ended Aug 1 and Oct 31, 2025 | "We anticipate these actions will result in additional reductions in our overall headcount." |
| 10-K, fiscal 2026 (filed Mar 16, 2026) | Dell "will continue to take certain measures to reduce costs, including employee reorganizations, limitation of external hiring" |
| 10-Qs, quarters ended May 1 and Jul 31, 2026 | Dell expects "to continue to scale operating expenses as we take targeted measures to manage costs, including employee reorganizations, limitation of external hiring" |
The explicit forecast of lower headcount does not appear in the two 2026 quarterly reports. The commitment to reorganizations and hiring limits does. Severance charges are still rising, and $339 million in severance was owed but unpaid at July 31, 2026.
Dell's 2026 filings promise continued employee reorganizations and hiring limits but no longer forecast lower headcount in so many words. That is not a guarantee in either direction; severance charges are the clearest signal to watch.
Laid off by Dell? Your first steps
In the records checked, Dell layoffs have arrived without a WARN notice, so a 60-day public clock may never start. Your clock starts with the agreement in front of you.
Step 01: Get your terms in writing before you sign
Use the checklist above and the email below. Note the signing deadline first; everything else depends on it.
Step 02: If you are 40 or older, use the full review window
In a group layoff, the waiver must give you at least 45 days to consider and 7 days to revoke, plus written job-title and age data for the group. Missing data is a question to raise with HR or a lawyer.
Step 03: Compare health coverage before the window closes
Step 04: File for unemployment in the right state
Step 05: If you hold a work visa, check your deadline today
Subject: Request for written confirmation of separation terms Hi [HR contact name], Thank you for the information about my separation. Before I sign, could you confirm the following in writing? 1. My notification date, last working day and separation date 2. My severance amount and how it was calculated 3. My health coverage end date and COBRA terms 4. Treatment of my unvested stock awards, bonus and accrued PTO 5. The full text of any non-disparagement or release clauses 6. The deadline to sign, and any revocation period 7. Whether I can apply for internal roles, and until what date Thank you, [Your name] [Employee ID]
Then restart the search with a one-line layoff story. Dell's cuts have been reported every year since 2023, so interviewers will not need a long explanation.
My role was eliminated in one of Dell's ongoing reorganizations. Dell's headcount fell about 10% a year for three straight years, according to its annual reports, and my team was part of the [sales / engineering / services] consolidation. Before that, I [one result with a number, for example: grew my territory's storage revenue 18% in a year]. I'm now focused on [role type] roles where I can [core skill], and this one stood out because [specific reason tied to the job description].
After a Dell layoff, lock in your signing deadline, severance terms, health coverage and any visa date first. Then apply with a two-sentence layoff story and one measurable result.
- 01Dell's headcount fell from about 133,000 in February 2023 to about 97,000 in January 2026, roughly 36,000 fewer jobs, per its annual reports.
- 02Dell's last layoff announcement by SEC filing was February 2023 (about 5%, roughly 6,650 people). Later cuts appear as severance charges and press reports.
- 03Severance charges: $648M in fiscal 2024, $693M in fiscal 2025, $569M in fiscal 2026 and $488M from February to July 2026.
- 04R&D's share of severance charges rose from 6% in fiscal 2024 to 57% in the quarter ended July 31, 2026.
- 05No Dell WARN notice was found in Texas, California, Massachusetts, North Carolina or Tennessee records checked through late October 2026.
- 06Claims of 4,000 to 15,000 cuts in August and September 2026 were unconfirmed as of October 30, 2026.
Is Dell laying off in October 2026?
No new Dell round was confirmed as of October 30, 2026. Dell's filings show continuing cuts: $261 million in severance charges in the quarter ended July 31, 2026. Online claims of 4,000 to 15,000 cuts since August, and an anonymous October 28 post about sales cuts in India, have not been confirmed by Dell, an SEC filing or a state WARN notice.
How many employees has Dell laid off in 2026?
Dell has not disclosed a 2026 layoff count. Its 10-Qs show $488 million in severance charges from February to July 2026, up from $334 million a year earlier, but they give no headcount. Dell reports its employee count once a year, in its annual report.
How many employees does Dell have?
Dell reported approximately 97,000 employees as of January 30, 2026, down from about 108,000 a year earlier, 120,000 in February 2024 and 133,000 in February 2023, according to its annual reports.
Does Dell give severance?
Yes. Dell recorded $569 million in severance charges in fiscal 2026 and $488 million in the first half of fiscal 2027. It does not publish a severance formula. One employee told The Oklahoman in 2024 that severance was conditioned on signing a non-disparagement agreement.
Will there be more Dell layoffs?
Dell has not announced a date or number. Its latest 10-Q says it will keep taking targeted measures to manage costs, including employee reorganizations and limits on external hiring. It no longer explicitly forecasts lower headcount, which is not a guarantee either way.
Did Dell lay off 12,500 people in 2024?
That figure came from a single unnamed source quoted by SiliconANGLE in August 2024, which said the number could not be confirmed and might prove high. Dell never confirmed it. Dell's annual report later showed about 12,000 fewer employees over fiscal 2025, a net figure that includes attrition and reduced hiring.
Did Dell have layoffs in 2025?
Yes. Dell's headcount fell by about 12,000 in fiscal 2025, to about 108,000 at January 31, 2025, and it recorded $693 million in severance that year. CRN reported in August 2025 that sales roles, including the new-logo acquisitions team, were cut. Dell did not disclose a count.
Does Dell require employees to return to the office?
Yes. Since March 3, 2025, Dell employees who live near a Dell office are expected to work there five days a week. Remote workers who live farther from an office could stay remote, according to The Register's report on Michael Dell's memo.
Why doesn't Dell file WARN notices?
Federal WARN notice is required for a mass layoff at a single site: at least 50 full-time workers who are at least 33% of the site's workforce, or 500 or more. Dell has not explained its WARN decisions. No Dell notice was found in the five state databases checked for this article.
Are VMware layoffs Dell layoffs?
No. Dell completed its spin-off of VMware on November 1, 2021, and Broadcom acquired VMware in November 2023. VMware layoffs after the spin-off are not Dell workforce reductions.
