Intel ended 2023 with 124,800 employees. At the end of September 2026, it had 81,100.
On July 21, 2026, it confirmed another round of cuts, this time in its data center group. Two days later, it reported that its data center business had grown 59% in a year.
A growing unit is not a safe unit. A finished restructuring plan is not a finished layoff story.
If your badge says Hillsboro, Chandler, Folsom or Santa Clara, the headlines won't help you much. The filings will.

Intel layoffs today: latest update (as of October 30, 2026)
Intel's 2026 cuts are smaller and more targeted than the 2024 and 2025 rounds. They are also harder to see, because no announcement carries a number.
- June 2026, reported October 8: an Intel spokesperson confirmed to CRN "targeted actions" in its global sales organization that hit channel-facing roles. CRN said the cuts appear to have included layoffs and early retirement packages; Intel declined to say how many roles were affected.
- July 21, 2026: Intel confirmed job cuts in its data center group, saying the group is "aligning its organization to ensure it has the right roles and skills in place." It did not say how many people are affected (Business Insider, KJZZ).
- July 23, 2026: Intel reported second-quarter Data Center and AI revenue of $6.3 billion, up 59% from a year earlier.
- July 24, 2026: a California WARN notice listed 103 jobs in four Santa Clara buildings, effective August 15. Intel has not tied it to the data center round.
- July 24, 2026: Intel's 10-Q reported $235 million of severance charges for January to June, mostly under its 2025 Restructuring Plan.
- September 9, 2026: FinanceFeeds relayed a DigiTimes report that Intel could cut another 5% to 10% of its workforce. Intel has not confirmed it.
- September 18, 2026: a California notice listed 52 more Santa Clara jobs, effective September 30, 12 days later. Neither Santa Clara notice names a business unit.
- October 22, 2026: a California notice listed 67 jobs at the Folsom campus on Prairie City Road, effective October 31. It is Intel's first Folsom notice of 2026. The Sacramento Business Journal reported that the layoffs could go on for several weeks.
- October 29, 2026: Intel's third-quarter report put its workforce at 81,100 on September 26 (76,500 core Intel), down from 82,300 in June. It recorded $54 million of restructuring and other charges in the quarter, mainly under the 2025 plan, and reported Data Center and AI revenue of $7.3 billion, up 78%. The filing announced no new restructuring plan.
- October 30, 2026 check: no Intel notice dated after November 13, 2025 on Oregon's WARN list, none in Texas's 2026 listing or Arizona's WARN search, and none on the newest page of Washington's database. The state checks are detailed below.
Intel's 2026 layoffs are documented in pieces: a confirmed data center round with no headcount, targeted sales cuts with no headcount, three California notices covering 222 jobs, and $235 million of severance charges in the first half. No official 2026 layoff total exists.
Those pieces sit on top of two much larger rounds. The timeline shows how they connect.

If your employment at Intel is ending, request the actual employment end date and immigration documents from HR first. Review the I-94, approval notices and any salary-continuation or severance arrangement with immigration counsel; do not calculate from the date a payment reaches your bank.
Intel layoffs timeline, 2023 to 2026
Intel has run three restructuring programs in four years. Each had a different CEO, a different target and a different way of counting.

Intel layoffs 2025: the Lip-Bu Tan restructuring
Lip-Bu Tan became CEO on March 18, 2025. On July 24, 2025, he told employees that Intel was "implementing a plan to reduce our headcount by approximately 15%," with a global workforce of about 75,000 by year-end through layoffs and attrition.
The year-end count came in higher. On December 27, 2025, Intel had 80,100 core employees and 85,100 in total. Its 10-K says the 2025 actions cut the core workforce by about 15% from the second-quarter level.
Intel layoffs 2024: the 15% plan
On August 1, 2024, Intel paired a $1.6 billion second-quarter net loss with a plan to cut more than 15% of headcount, mostly by the end of 2024. In October, the formal plan put the reduction at 16,500 employees.
Core headcount fell from 115,000 in late September 2024 to 99,500 at year-end. CEO Pat Gelsinger resigned on December 1, 2024.
Intel's layoffs came in three waves: the 2022 program that ran into early 2024, the 2024 plan to cut 16,500 jobs, and the 2025 plan to cut the core workforce by about 15%. The 2026 cuts are smaller and targeted, and Intel's 2026 severance charges relate mainly to the 2025 plan.
The rounds have names and dates. The total is harder, because Intel never publishes one.
How many employees does Intel have now?
The cleanest layoff number Intel publishes is not a layoff number. It is a headcount.
Every quarterly earnings release includes an employee table. Here is that table, end of 2023 to September 2026:
| Date | Core Intel | Mobileye and other subsidiaries | NAND (sold to SK hynix) | Total | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sep 26, 2026 | 76,500 | 4,600 | Excluded | 81,100 | Q3 2026 release |
| Jun 27, 2026 | 77,600 | 4,700 | Excluded | 82,300 | Q2 2026 release |
| Mar 28, 2026 | 78,500 | 4,700 | Excluded | 83,200 | Q1 2026 release |
| Dec 27, 2025 | 80,100 | 5,000 | Excluded | 85,100 | Q4 2025 release |
| Sep 27, 2025 | 83,300 | 5,100 | Excluded | 88,400 | Q3 2025 release |
| Jun 28, 2025 | 96,400 | 5,000 | Excluded | 101,400 | Q2 2025 release |
| Mar 29, 2025 | 97,600 | 5,000 | Excluded | 102,600 | Q2 2025 release |
| Dec 28, 2024 | 99,500 | 5,400 | 4,000 | 108,900 | Q4 2024 release |
| Sep 28, 2024 | 115,000 | 5,400 | 3,700 | 124,100 | Q3 2024 release |
| Jun 29, 2024 | 116,500 | 5,300 | 3,500 | 125,300 | Q2 2024 release |
| Dec 30, 2023 | 116,200 | 5,000 | 3,600 | 124,800 | Q4 2024 release |
Two exits shrank the count without a layoff. NAND employees left it when the SK hynix sale closed on March 27, 2025. About 3,000 Altera employees left it after Intel sold 51% of Altera on September 12, 2025.
Why the Intel layoff numbers don't match
You will see 15,000, 16,500, 75,000 and "more than 35,000" in headlines. They measure different things.
| Figure | Where it comes from | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| About 15,000 | August 2024 coverage of the "more than 15%" plan | A planned cut, announced before the formal plan |
| 16,500 | Intel's October 2024 8-K | The 2024 plan's headcount reduction |
| About 15% | Intel's July 2025 8-K and 10-K | The 2025 cut to the core workforce, measured against June 2025 |
| About 75,000 | Lip-Bu Tan's July 2025 memo | A year-end 2025 workforce target; the actual core count was 80,100 |
| 35,000 to 40,000 | Press tallies | Headcount differences between two dates, including divestitures, buyouts and attrition |
Intel's core workforce fell 34% from the end of 2023 to September 2026, from 116,200 to 76,500. Layoffs explain much of that drop, but not all of it: buyouts, attrition and the Altera sale are inside the same number.
Headcount tells you how much smaller Intel is. It doesn't tell you where. For that, you need the state filings.
Intel WARN notices by state
A WARN notice is the closest thing to a receipt. It names a site, a count and a date.
Intel WARN filings, 2024 to 2026
California rows are EDD records summed per notice date. Texas rows come from the Texas Workforce Commission. The July 2025 Oregon row comes from Oregon's WARN notice file. Other Oregon rows and the Arizona and New Mexico counts come from reporting that cites state records; Arizona notice dates match the state's WARN search.

- Federal WARN covers 50 or more employees at a single site. Smaller cuts spread across buildings may not require notice.
- Buyouts and voluntary early retirement are not layoffs, so they never appear in WARN records.
- Cuts outside the US never appear in US WARN databases.
- Notices get revised: Oregon's July 2025 notice grew from 529 jobs to 2,392 four days later, then to 2,509 in August.
Some notices arrived after the separations they describe. California's August 25, 2025 notices list July effective dates. Oregon's November 13, 2025 notice covers separations that began September 16. That is not, by itself, proof of a violation: under federal law, wages paid in lieu of notice reduce what an employer owes.
Intel layoffs in Oregon (Hillsboro and Aloha)
Hillsboro is Intel's research and development hub, and Oregon has the largest Intel counts in the WARN records reviewed. The Oregonian reported that Intel's Oregon workforce went from more than 23,000 at the start of 2024 to over 20,000 by January 2025.
- 2024: 1,300 permanent layoffs at the Hillsboro campus, with first separations in a 14-day window from November 15, 2024 (OPB).
- July 2025: a notice for 529 employees at three Hillsboro sites and one in Aloha, revised four days later to 2,392 (KPTV, OPB). A second revision on August 25, 2025 added about 117 more, and Oregon's WARN list now carries the notice at 2,509. More than 300 module development engineers and more than 300 equipment maintenance staff were affected, OPB reported.
- November 2025: 669 more at the same four sites. None of the affected workers are represented by a union, Hillsboro News-Times reported.
- 2026: no Intel notice on Oregon's state WARN list dated after November 13, 2025, as of October 30, 2026.
Intel layoffs in California (Santa Clara, Folsom and San Jose)
Folsom, the Sacramento-area campus on Prairie City Road, accounted for 539 of the 2025 total; Santa Clara buildings accounted for the other 1,110. A San Jose site on Innovation Drive appears in 2023 and 2024 notices. In 2026, notices dated July 24 and September 18 named four Santa Clara buildings (155 jobs), and a notice dated October 22 named Folsom (67 jobs).
Intel layoffs in Arizona, Texas and New Mexico
- Arizona (Chandler): 385 jobs at the Ocotillo campus in October 2024, when Intel employed about 12,000 people in Arizona (ABC15). Then 696 in July 2025 and 97 more in an August 25, 2025 notice to the Arizona Department of Economic Security (AZFamily). KJZZ reported that Intel had not said how many Arizona jobs the 2026 data center round affects.
- Texas (Austin): 251 jobs in 2024 and 110 in 2025, per the Texas Workforce Commission.
- New Mexico (Rio Rancho): 227 jobs in a notice the state's Department of Workforce Solutions received on July 16, 2025, with layoffs from July to September (KOB). Rio Rancho's mayor said employment would remain around 3,000.
Other state records checked
- Oregon: no Intel notice on the state WARN list dated after November 13, 2025, through notices dated October 29, 2026.
- Texas: TWC's 2026 WARN listing, with notices through October 27, 2026, has no Intel notice. The data.texas.gov dataset is current only through June 23, 2026.
- Washington: no Intel entry among notices received September 28 to October 29, 2026 on the newest page of ESD's database; older pages were not searched.
- Arizona: the state's WARN search lists Intel notices dated October 15, 2024, July 7, 2025 and August 25, 2025, and none in 2026. It does not show counts, so Arizona counts come from reporting.
- New Mexico: the state database was not checked; the count comes from reporting.
These checks cover different date ranges and do not prove that no other Intel notices exist.
The US WARN notices in this table cover about 9,100 Intel jobs from 2024 to 2026: roughly 4,500 in Oregon, 2,900 in California, 1,200 in Arizona, 360 in Texas and 230 in New Mexico. Intel's core workforce fell by about 39,700 over a similar period.
The filings tell you where Intel cut. Intel's own statements tell you why, and the reason has changed with each CEO.
Why Intel is cutting jobs
Intel did not cut for one reason. It cut for three, in sequence.
| Year | CEO | Stated reason | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2024 | Pat Gelsinger | A $1.6 billion Q2 net loss; a $10 billion cost plan to "create a sustainable financial engine"; spending adjusted "to current business trends" | Q2 2024 release, 8-K |
| 2025 | Lip-Bu Tan | Fewer management layers, money moved to core client and server chips, and lower-priority programs cut | 8-K, CEO memo |
| 2026 | Lip-Bu Tan | Data Center Group "aligning its organization" for "the right roles and skills"; sales cuts described as "targeted actions" | KJZZ, CRN |
Our Q2 financial performance was disappointing, even as we hit key product and process technology milestones.
The 2025 memo went beyond headcount. Intel dropped planned projects in Germany and Poland, further slowed construction in Ohio, and planned to consolidate assembly and test operations from Costa Rica into larger sites in Vietnam and Malaysia. Management layers were cut by about 50%.
Office rules changed too. Intel's 10-K says employees are generally expected on site at least four days a week.
None of the Intel statements reviewed for this article attributes the layoffs to AI replacing workers.
Intel's layoffs are a cost and structure story, not an automation story. The 2024 cuts followed losses, the 2025 cuts removed management layers and side projects, and the 2026 cuts reshaped a data center group that was growing.
Knowing why your role went away won't pay rent. The exit terms will.
Intel severance and benefits (as reported)
The number that decides your next six months is not 15%. It is weeks of pay.
No standard Intel US severance formula was found in its filings or in the reporting reviewed. These are the terms that have been reported, plus what the filings show.
| Round | What was reported | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 Oregon buyouts | At least 13 weeks of pay plus 1.5 weeks per year of service; prorated bonuses; extended health care benefits | The Oregonian via The Astorian, Jan 15, 2025 |
| July 2025 Oregon layoffs | 60 days' notice, or about four weeks' notice plus nine weeks of pay and benefits in lieu of further notice | KPTV, citing Intel's WARN letter |
| Company-wide charges | Employee severance and benefit charges: $2.48 billion in 2024, $1.79 billion in 2025, $235 million from January to June 2026. Total restructuring and other charges were $54 million in Q3 2026 | 10-K, 10-Q, Q3 2026 release |
Here is what the reported 2024 buyout formula produces. A cap, if there was one, was not reported in the coverage reviewed.
| Years of service | 13 weeks + 1.5 weeks per year |
|---|---|
| 3 years | 13 + 4.5 = 17.5 weeks |
| 10 years | 13 + 15 = 28 weeks |
| 20 years | 13 + 30 = 43 weeks |
Treat reported Intel severance terms as a benchmark, not an entitlement. The notice pay, severance weeks and health coverage in your own agreement are the only terms that count.
The official record ends here. The forums pick up where it stops, with all the reliability that implies.
What Intel employees are saying (unverified)
These are anonymous or forum posts, not employment records or company policy. They cannot establish the size of a round, an individual's package or the timing of future cuts.
- Blind: Blind's Intel layoff discussions include questions about which organizations were hit, whether a round is over, and how H-1B holders should handle travel after a layoff. Several posts pass on rumors of further rounds.
- SemiWiki forum: in a July 2026 thread on the data center cuts, one commenter speculated that Intel's CEO wants the company to stay smaller than 85,000 employees, with some areas hiring while others cut. Intel has published no such target.
- TheLayoff.com: a thread on Intel's TheLayoff board asked whether 50K was the "real target goal for 2026." No Intel filing contains that number; Intel's September 2026 count was 81,100.
Rumors are loud. A plan for Monday morning is quieter and more useful.
If you were laid off by Intel: first steps
Your first week is paperwork, not applications. These steps follow how Intel's layoffs have actually worked since 2024.
Step 01: Separate your notice date from your separation date
Intel's 2025 Oregon letter described either 60 days' notice, or about four weeks' notice plus nine weeks of pay and benefits. Get your version in writing. If your notice looks short and no pay in lieu was offered, an employment lawyer can tell you whether WARN applies.
Step 02: Check the severance math before you sign
Compare your offer with the reported terms above. Ask HR how your years of service, bonus and health coverage were calculated.
Step 03: On a work visa? Start the clock today
Step 04: Lock in health coverage and file for unemployment
Step 05: Restart the search with a two-sentence layoff story
Subject: Request for written separation details Hi [HR partner name], Thank you for walking me through the workforce reduction. To make sure I understand my options, could you confirm the following in writing? 1. My notice date and my separation date 2. Whether I am on paid non-working notice, and for how many weeks 3. My severance amount in weeks and how it was calculated 4. My health coverage end date, COBRA terms and premium arrangement 5. Treatment of my bonus, unvested RSUs and accrued vacation 6. Whether I can apply for internal roles, and the deadline 7. My rehire eligibility 8. The deadline to sign the separation agreement Thank you, [Your name]
After an Intel layoff, confirm your dates, notice pay and health coverage first. Visa holders should treat the 60-day grace period as the first deadline, not the last.
Will there be more Intel layoffs?
Intel's filings describe finishing old plans. They do not announce a new one.
- Remaining 2025 actions: the July 2026 10-Q says most of the 2025 Restructuring Plan was completed in 2025, with the remainder expected in 2026.
- Spending: Intel expects total R&D and MG&A expenses to decrease in 2026 relative to recent periods.
- Third quarter: the October 29, 2026 results showed $54 million of restructuring and other charges and no new restructuring plan.
- Unconfirmed report: the September 2026 DigiTimes report of a further 5% to 10% cut. Intel has not confirmed it.
The next official data points are Intel's third-quarter 10-Q, not yet filed as of October 30, 2026, and its fourth-quarter earnings release, with an updated employee count.
Intel has not announced a new restructuring plan in 2026, but its filings still expect 2025 plan actions to finish this year. A falling cost forecast is not a promise that any team is safe.
- 01Intel confirmed data center cuts on July 21, 2026, without a number. The latest California notice, dated October 22, covers 67 Folsom jobs.
- 02Intel booked $235 million of severance charges from January to June 2026; its 2026 California notices cover 222 jobs.
- 03Intel's core workforce fell from 116,200 at the end of 2023 to 76,500 in September 2026. About 3,000 of that drop is the Altera sale.
- 04US WARN notices from 2024 to 2026 cover about 9,100 Intel jobs, led by Oregon at roughly 4,500.
- 05Reported 2024 buyouts paid at least 13 weeks plus 1.5 weeks per year of service; a reported further 5% to 10% cut is unconfirmed.
