On September 22, 2026, Microsoft eliminated 268 roles across its Xbox game studios. The same memo moved the next Halo game to Activision.
Two days later, a Washington filing listed the roles: artists, game designers, producers, audio designers, software engineers. 277 positions, last day November 21.
It was Microsoft's second layoff round in less than three months. The first took about 4,800 jobs.
On October 26, Microsoft offered a voluntary exit package to about 60,000 employees, roughly a quarter of its workforce.
If your badge says Microsoft, LinkedIn, GitHub or Xbox, the headlines blur together. The dates, the filings and the packages do not.

Microsoft layoffs today: latest update (October 30, 2026)
The newest move is a buyout, not a layoff. On October 26, Microsoft opened a Voluntary Exit Offer to about 60,000 employees. The latest confirmed layoff round began on September 22, and its Washington positions end on November 21. No new company-wide layoff round or Washington WARN filing was found in company posts, filings or major reporting as of October 30.
What happened since July, newest first:
- October 28: earnings call. Hood said the company's cost guidance "includes an estimate for the recently announced employee voluntary exit offer." She gave no separate figure for it (Microsoft Investor Relations).
- October 26: Voluntary Exit Offer. Chief people officer Amy Coleman announced it in a memo for employees at level 70 and below in participating teams in the US, Canada, the UK and India. About 60,000 are eligible; employees decide by early December and those who accept leave on December 31 (CNBC). Microsoft told GeekWire the offer is not a replacement for layoffs, which remain part of its approach depending on business conditions (GeekWire). Details in the buyout section.
- October 12 and 13: cuts in Israel and Kenya. About 50 Copilot Studio employees in Israel were called to pre-dismissal hearings, with about half expected to remain in roles at the R&D center (Calcalist). In Nairobi, Microsoft said it was "communicating directly with employees in Kenya about proposed changes to our engineering operations"; Capital FM reported that part of the Africa Development Centre would close (Capital FM). No headcount was published for Kenya.
- October 5: Ninja Theory layoffs reportedly begin. GamesBeat cited staff posts on social media; no headcount was given. Microsoft had opened consultation on a proposed closure of the UK studio after two agreements to hand it off fell through.
- September 24: Washington filing made public. 277 positions: 252 at the Redmond campus and 25 remote. Art, game production, game design, technical art and audio account for 77; software engineering for 60 (GeekWire).
- September 22: fewer than 600 cuts globally, about 300 in Washington. 268 were in Xbox Game Studios; the rest were in areas including cloud, AI, marketing and research (GeekWire). Xbox content chief Matt Booty wrote that the actions since July, including the studio divestitures, bring Xbox "roughly three-quarters of the way through" its restructuring (Xbox Wire).
- July 29: annual report and earnings call. Microsoft reported about 223,000 full-time employees on June 30 (Form 10-K). CFO Amy Hood said "total company headcount declined 2% year-over-year" (Microsoft Investor Relations).
- July 6: about 4,800 jobs cut, the year's largest round. Details in the next section.
Microsoft's 2026 layoffs came in two announced rounds: about 4,800 jobs on July 6 and fewer than 600 on September 22. The September Xbox cuts belong to the 3,200-role Xbox plan announced in July. The October Voluntary Exit Offer is a buyout that employees choose, not a layoff round.
On an H-1B or OPT?
If your employment at Microsoft is ending, request the actual employment end date and immigration documents from HR first. Review the I-94, approval notices and any salary-continuation or severance arrangement with immigration counsel; do not calculate from the date a payment reaches your bank. If you are weighing the Voluntary Exit Offer, take those documents to counsel before you accept: people who accept leave on December 31.
Microsoft layoffs July 2026: 4,800 jobs and an Xbox reset
- About 4,800 jobs, 2.1% of the global workforce
- About 1,600 of the cuts were in Xbox, the first step of roughly 3,200 Xbox reductions planned through fiscal 2027
- Sales and consulting cuts followed the launch of the $2.5 billion Microsoft Frontier Company, which plans to embed 6,000 engineers inside customers
- About 30% of roughly 8,750 eligible employees had taken the voluntary retirement offer, which reduced the size of the layoff
- Microsoft said it had redeployed more than 4,000 employees into new roles over the previous year
Chief people officer Amy Coleman wrote that "the roles eliminated today are not being replaced by AI." She also wrote that "AI is changing how work gets done" and that "there will be more changes ahead; other parts of our business will need to make similar changes."
The Xbox plan: 3,200 roles through fiscal 2027
- Compulsion Games and Double Fine return to their management and become independent studios with their IP.
- Ninja Theory and Undead Labs had agreed terms to join new owners. In September, Xbox said both Ninja Theory agreements had fallen through and opened consultation on a proposed closure of the studio.
- Arkane in France entered a works council consultation on "potential strategic options."
The September 22 round added studio moves: the next Halo game and Rare and World's Edge go to Activision, Obsidian moves under Bethesda, and Playground and Turn 10 combine into one studio.
The 3,200 Xbox figure is a fiscal-year plan, not an extra cut on top of 4,800. It includes the 1,600 Xbox roles cut in July and the 268 cut in September.
Microsoft layoffs timeline: 2023 to 2026
Microsoft rarely gives a headcount itself. It gave percentages in 2025, and outlets converted them to the familiar 6,000 and 9,000. Rows can overlap with each other and with the WARN table below, so they should not be added together.

Since January 2023, Microsoft and its subsidiaries have cut jobs in at least one reported round in most quarters. The largest were January 2023 (10,000), May 2025 (about 6,000), July 2025 (about 9,000) and July 2026 (about 4,800).
The Microsoft buyouts: voluntary retirement and voluntary exit
- Lump-sum cash: 8 to 39 weeks of base pay, by level and tenure
- Up to 5 years of continued medical, dental and vision access; Microsoft paid the first year in full, then standard COBRA rates
- Unvested stock kept vesting for 6 months, or 12 months with 24+ years of service
- Terms sent May 7, 2026, with 30 days to decide; no reported restrictions on later employment
The retirement offer is closed. In her July 6 memo, Coleman wrote that Microsoft "will continue exploring similar approaches in the future." On October 26, it announced the next one.
The October 2026 Voluntary Exit Offer
- About 60,000 eligible employees in the US, Canada, the UK and India, at level 70 and below; corporate vice presidents are excluded
- Business leaders decide whether their teams take part; the sales organization and some engineering and corporate groups do not
- Pay equivalent to Microsoft's standard severance: base pay by tenure and level, continued stock vesting, health coverage for a fixed period and career transition services
- No extended health coverage, which was a major draw of the spring retirement program
- Decision due in the first week of December; those who accept leave on December 31
A buyout is chosen by the employee and a layoff is not. Microsoft's spring 2026 retirement buyout paid 8 to 39 weeks of base pay; the July layoffs were reported at 60 days to 39 weeks. The October offer matches standard severance, with a decision due in early December.

Washington filings list 882 Microsoft positions in 2026, 3,202 in 2025, none in 2024 and 3,199 in 2023. Filings are a subset of Microsoft's cuts, not a company total.
Why Microsoft keeps cutting jobs
Microsoft's headcount barely moved for three years while it cut thousands of jobs. Then, in fiscal 2026, it fell.
| As of June 30 | Full-time employees | US | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2022 | 221,000 | 122,000 | Before the 10,000-job round |
| 2023 | 221,000 | 120,000 | Flat |
| 2024 | 228,000 | 126,000 | Up 7,000; Activision Blizzard was acquired in 2023 |
| 2025 | 228,000 | 125,000 | Flat, despite more than 15,000 layoffs |
| 2026 | 223,000 | 121,000 | Down 5,000 |
What Microsoft's leaders said, round by round:
- 2023: Customers were trying to "optimize their digital spend to do more with less," Satya Nadella wrote, adding that Microsoft "will continue to hire in key strategic areas."
- 2025: "Our overall headcount is relatively unchanged," Nadella wrote in July. "This is the enigma of success in an industry that has no franchise value" (Microsoft).
- 2026: "We expect headcount will decrease year-over-year," Hood said in April (earnings call). President Brad Smith told GeekWire: "Microsoft can only be a strong employer if it has a successful business." GeekWire tied the July cuts to record AI infrastructure spending and a 30% stock slide over nine months.
These statements explain priorities. They do not say which teams are next.
Flat headcount never meant no layoffs at Microsoft. From 2023 to 2025 the company cut and hired at the same time; fiscal 2026 was the first year the total fell.
Microsoft severance package: what each round paid
| Round | Cash | Stock | Health | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jan 2023 layoffs (US, official) | "Above-market severance"; 60 days' notice | 6 months of continued vesting | 6 months | Microsoft |
| 2025 layoffs | No formula published; gaming memo cited severance pay and healthcare | Not reported | Healthcare coverage cited; term not reported | Windows Central |
| 2025 exits instead of a PIP | 16 weeks' pay | Not reported | Not reported | Business Insider |
| 2026 voluntary retirement | 8 to 39 weeks of base pay | 6 or 12 months of vesting | Up to 5 years of access; year 1 paid | GeekWire |
| Jul 2026 layoffs (US) | 60 days minimum, 39 weeks maximum; 1 week per 6 months of service (level 64 and below), 2 weeks (65 to 67) | 6 to 12 months of vesting | 6 months, plus an optional extra year of COBRA | Business Insider, via Fast Company and Inc. |
| Oct 2026 voluntary exit offer | Equal to standard severance: base pay by tenure and level | Continued vesting | A fixed period; no extended coverage | GeekWire |
Under the reported July formula, an employee at level 63 with six years of service would get 12 weeks; at level 66 with the same tenure, 24 weeks. Level 68 and above has a separate package.
- In early 2025, Business Insider reported that Microsoft fired about 2,000 employees deemed underperformers without severance
- An April 2025 memo barred rehiring for two years after leaving with a 0% or 60% Rewards rating, or during or after a PIP
- A layoff, a performance termination and a voluntary exit can carry different pay, rehire and unemployment outcomes
Microsoft's reported 2026 layoff formula scales with level and tenure, from 60 days to 39 weeks of base pay. The employee's own written offer is the only package that applies.
Microsoft vs LinkedIn, GitHub and Xbox: who cut what
Searches for "Microsoft layoffs" mix four employers with different filings and memos. The table keeps them apart.
| Business | Relationship | Recent cuts | Where notices appear |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft (corporate) | Parent company | About 4,800 (Jul 2026), fewer than 600 (Sep 2026); buyout offered to about 60,000 (Oct 2026) | Washington filings under Microsoft |
| Xbox, Activision Blizzard, ZeniMax | Microsoft gaming division | 1,600 (Jul 2026) and 268 (Sep 2026), inside Microsoft's totals; 3,200 planned through FY27 | Microsoft in Washington; ZeniMax in Maryland and Texas; Activision Blizzard in California |
| Microsoft subsidiary | About 5% (May 2026); 281 in California (2025); 668 and 716 (2023) | California filings under LinkedIn Corporation | |
| GitHub | Microsoft subsidiary in the CoreAI organization; no standalone CEO since August 2025 | Up to 10% (Feb 2023); none confirmed in 2025 or 2026 | No California filing found for 2025 or 2026 |
Xbox cuts count in Microsoft's announced totals. LinkedIn and GitHub announce and file their own cuts, and their packages can differ.
What Microsoft employees are saying (unverified)
Anonymous posts move faster than filings. They are also wrong more often.
- Before July: a Blind summary from July 3 described posts pointing to a large July round, with some employees relieved the wait would end.
- On severance: a June 30 Blind post claimed most cuts would come as low ("LITE") performance ratings without severance. Some replies disputed it, and the later reported July offers included severance.
- Inside Xbox: Aftermath reported that some internal Xbox product teams lost "30-40 percent of their staff."
- In January: posts on Reddit and Blind fed the 11,000 to 22,000 rumor that Microsoft called "100 percent made up."
Laid off from Microsoft: first steps
A Microsoft notice starts several clocks at once: last day, stock vests, benefits and, for visa holders, immigration.
Step 01: Confirm the separation date in writing
Both 2026 Washington filings set separation 60 days after notice. Each employee should confirm their own last day, final paycheck and treatment of unused vacation.
Step 02: Ask about internal roles during the notice period
Microsoft says it redeployed more than 4,000 employees into new roles in the year before July 2026. HR can confirm whether internal applications are open and until when.
Step 03: Map stock vests against the last day
List every unvested stock award and its vest dates. The reported July 2026 offers continued vesting for 6 to 12 months by tenure; the written offer controls.
Step 04: Check immigration deadlines
Step 05: File for unemployment and compare health options
Step 06: Get rehire eligibility on record
My role on the [team or organization] was eliminated in Microsoft's [month and year] restructuring, along with [number] others. Before that, I [specific accomplishment, with a measured result]. I'm looking for a role where I can do more of [skill], which is why this position stands out.
Separation, stock, health coverage, rehire status and visa dates belong on one calendar in the first week. None should be assumed from a colleague's package.
- 01Microsoft cut about 4,800 jobs on July 6, 2026 and fewer than 600 on September 22, 2026.
- 02The 3,200-role Xbox plan for fiscal 2027 includes the July and September Xbox cuts; it does not add to them.
- 03About 30% of roughly 8,750 eligible US employees took the 2026 voluntary retirement offer.
- 04A second buyout, the Voluntary Exit Offer, opened on October 26, 2026 to about 60,000 employees in four countries.
- 05Reported July 2026 US severance ranged from 60 days to 39 weeks of base pay, by level and tenure.
- 06Washington filings list 882 Microsoft positions in 2026; they are a subset, not a total.
FAQ
Is Microsoft laying off in October 2026?
No new company-wide layoff round was announced in October 2026, as of October 30. Smaller cuts were reported: about 50 Copilot Studio employees in Israel were called to pre-dismissal hearings, Microsoft proposed changes to its Nairobi engineering centre, and GamesBeat reported on October 5 that layoffs had begun at Ninja Theory, the UK studio facing a proposed closure. On October 26, Microsoft offered voluntary buyouts to about 60,000 employees. Positions from the September 22 round end on November 21 in Washington.
How many employees has Microsoft laid off in 2026?
Up to about 5,400 in two rounds: about 4,800 on July 6 and fewer than 600 on September 22. Voluntary retirements and LinkedIn's May cuts are separate. Microsoft had about 223,000 full-time employees on June 30, 2026.
How many people did Microsoft lay off in 2025?
More than 15,000, according to CNBC: about 6,000 (3%) in May and about 9,000 (about 4%) in July, plus smaller filings. For July, AP reported that Microsoft would give only a percentage, about 4%.
Does Microsoft give severance?
Yes. For the July 2026 US layoffs, Business Insider reported 60 days to 39 weeks of base pay, 6 to 12 months of stock vesting and 6 months of health coverage. Some 2025 performance-based terminations reportedly came without severance.
Will there be more Microsoft layoffs?
Microsoft has not announced another round. Chief people officer Amy Coleman wrote in July 2026 that there will be more changes ahead, CFO Amy Hood said in April that Microsoft expects headcount to decrease year over year, and on September 22 Xbox said the actions since July, including the studio divestitures, had taken it about three-quarters of the way through its restructuring. When it opened the October buyout offer, Microsoft told GeekWire the offer is not a replacement for layoffs, which remain part of its approach depending on business conditions.
How many Xbox employees were laid off in 2026?
About 1,600 on July 6 and 268 on September 22, as part of a plan to reduce Xbox by about 3,200 roles, roughly 20%, through fiscal 2027. Ninja Theory faces a proposed closure.
Is LinkedIn laying off employees?
LinkedIn cut about 5% of its staff in May 2026, according to Reuters, and filed California notices covering 606 positions effective July 13, 2026. No later LinkedIn round was found as of October 30.
What is Microsoft's Rule of 70?
It refers to the eligibility formula of Microsoft's 2026 voluntary retirement program: age plus years of service of at least 70, for US employees at level 67 and below. Its 30-day decision window, which opened May 7, closed in June 2026.
